place attachment

Pride of place in a religious context: an environmental psychology and sociology perspective

Pride of Place (PoP) is the positive emotion that people can have for the place they identify or associate themselves with. It is linked to one’s own place identity and attachment to one’s own place, whether at a local or broader geographical scale. Positive pride of where one comes from can elicit a series of behaviours that are of prosocial and caring character, a pride that is too extreme, however, can result in nationalism and antisocial behaviours (at least towards what is outside one’s own place).

Residential place attachment as an adaptive strategy for coping with the reduction of spatial abilities in old age

This study intended to test whether attachment to one's own residential place at neighborhood level could represent a coping response for the elderly (consistently with the "docility hypothesis"; Lawton, 1982), when dealing with the demands of unfamiliar environments, in order to balance their reduction of spatial abilities. Specifically, a sequential path was tested, in which neighborhood attachment was expected to play a buffer role between lowered spatial competence and neighborhood satisfaction.

The better the bond, the better we cope. The effects of place attachment intensity and place attachment styles on the link between perception of risk and emotional and behavioral coping

The general aim is to advance the understanding of the role of both place attachment intensity and place attachment styles for adaptive coping strategies with flood risk. Place attachment styles are operationalized as secure, preoccupied, and fearful-avoidant. Risk coping strategies are conceptualized as emotional (i.e., distress), and behavioral coping strategies (i.e., positive, negative, and avoidant). Two main cross-sectional studies were conducted in both high and low-risk areas: one study in Italy (N = 100) and one study in Romania (N = 391).

Loving, leaving, living: evacuation site place attachment predicts natural hazard coping behavior

Almost all the studies about place attachment in environmental risk contexts only consider the role of place attachment to home or local area. However, especially when it comes to risks requiring evacuation from home and local area, it is likely that place attachment to evacuation sites, if any, becomes relevant too. The present studies intend to understand how place attachment to evacuation sites affects coping behaviors in natural hazard contexts.
