Sequential dual-phase cone-beam CT is able to intra-procedurally predict the one-month treatment outcome of multi-focal HCC, in course of degradable starch microsphere TACE

Objective: To evaluate the prognostic value of sequential dual-phase CBCT (DP-CBCT) imaging performed during degradable starch microsphere TACE (DSM-TACE) session in predicting the HCC’s response to treatment, evaluate with modify response evaluation criteria in solid tumours (mRECIST) at 1-month multi-detector CT (MDCT) follow-up. Materials and methods: Between January and May 2018, 24 patients (68.5 ± 8.5 year [45–85]) with HCC lesions (n = 96 [average 4/patient]) were prospectively enrolled.

Periodontal health and compliance: a comparison between Essix and Hawley retainers

INTRODUCTION: Many studies on removable retainers have focused on retention efficacy and characteristics. However, studies on plaque accumulation, periodontal health, breakages, and patient compliance are still lacking. Thus, in this study, we aimed at evaluating these parameters in 2 groups of young patients wearing Essix or Hawley retainers for a 6-month period.

The Use of a novel porcine derived acellular dermal matrix (mucoderm) in peri-implant soft tissue augmentation: Preliminary results of a prospective pilot cohort study

Objective. Over the years, several techniques have been proposed for soft tissue augmentation around dental implants in order to improve keratinized mucosa width (KMW). Recently, a porcine derived acellular dermal matrix (Mucoderm) has been proposed as autogenous graft substitute in order to avoid palatal harvesting and obtain comparable results to connective tissue grafts, in terms of aesthetics and function. The aim of this study is to present the one-year follow-up results of this matrix in peri-implant soft tissue augmentation procedures. Material and Methods.

The use of Transcollation Technology for Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery lobectomy

Background: Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) lobectomy is now considered the preferred approach at many centers for early stage lung cancer. However, it needs an adequate learning curve, and it may be challenging in non-expert hands. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Transcollation Technology over Traditional Electrocautery to perform hilar and mediastinal dissection during VATS lobectomy. Methods: This is a single-center retrospective study including consecutive patients undergoing VATS lobectomy for lung cancer.

Impact of predilation Before transcatheter aortic valve implantation with new-generation devices

Background: Significant aortic stenosis can be effectively treated with transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in patients at high or intermediate surgical risk. Predilation is often performed to facilitate TAVI implantation, but its risk-benefit balance with new-generation devices is detabed. We aimed to appraise whether predilation is still needed with new-generation devices for TAVI.

Uterus preserving prolapse repair. How long does it last?

Background: The preservation of the uterus has an important role in the pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery. Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess the long-term anatomical and functional outcomes of abdominal hysterosacropexy. Methods: Prospective study. A series of women who underwent open abdominal hysterosacropexy for high-stage POP with a minimum 75-month follow-up were included. Results: Data on 51 patients were included. Median follow-up was 136.7 months (range 75.8-258 months). Apical prolapse cure rate was 100%.

MR-based artificial intelligence model to assess response to therapy in locally advanced rectal cancer

Purpose: To develop and validate an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model based on texture analysis of high-resolution T2 weighted MR images able 1) to predict pathologic Complete Response (CR) and 2) to identify non-responders (NR) among patients with locally-advanced rectal cancer (LARC) after receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Method: Fifty-five consecutive patients with LARC were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Patients underwent 3 T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) acquiring T2-weighted images before, during and after CRT.

Circulating adrenomedullin estimates survival and reversibility of organ failure in sepsis: the prospective observational multinational Adrenomedullin and Outcome in Sepsis and Septic Shock-1 (AdrenOSS-1) study

Background: Adrenomedullin (ADM) regulates vascular tone and endothelial permeability during sepsis. Levels of circulating biologically active ADM (bio-ADM) show an inverse relationship with blood pressure and a direct relationship with vasopressor requirement.

An alternative treatment strategy for complicated chronic wounds. Negative pressure therapy over mesh skin graft

Extensive skin defect represents a real problem and major challenge in plastic and reconstructive surgery. On one hand, skin grafts offer a practical method to deal with skin defects despite their unsuitability for several complicated wounds. On the other hand, negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), applied before skin grafting, promotes granulation tissue growth. The aim of the study is to evaluate the improvement in wound healing given by the merger of these two different approaches. We treated 23 patients for large wounds of multiple factors.
