SUSTAINABLE URBAN PROJECT The role of public spaces in adapting cities to the effects of climate change

Contemporary urban planning is nowadays getting involved into thematic related with the slow and unceasing city transformations. This circumstance highlights the need for overcoming the sectoral approach to urban complexity, in favor of a more integrated one. The context to which reference is made is the urban area; the challenge is about the adaptation to the physical, social and economic transformations; the intervention tool to which the contribution refers is that of Urban Project.

Contemporary urban planning is nowadays getting involved into thematics related with the slow and unceasing city
transformations. This circumstance, highlights the need for overcoming the sectoral approach to urban complexity, in favor of a
more integrated one (Macciocco, 2015), but at the same time it also shows the great opportunity of making a sustainable change,
from a polysemic point of view, in the urban transformation and regeneration strategies which involve contemporary cities and
territories.

City of Encounters. Public Spaces and Social Interaction in Ancient Rome

The aim of this book is to identify and analyse the main internal
and external spaces that enabled and encouraged interaction
among individuals and groups in the ancient city of Rome. Such spaces
include places of worship, places of entertainment, bathhouses and
other places for personal care and recreation, guildhalls and places of
economic and political exchange. The main objective of each chapter
of the volume is to establish the topographical framework of spaces
and buildings, and the relations between spaces (and their furnishings)

This paper investigates the public space urban regeneration within the cultural processes established among urban planners, architects, artists, public administrations, and local communities in renewed national and international policies. In recent decades such policies have outlined new interest and innovative impulses on the topic of creativity, expanding the concept and placing it at the core of more general territorial development policies.

Interaction spaces. Semiotics and urban peripheries

This article is framed in the scope of the semiotics of space, examining the urban periphery and its public space practices (Greimas 1976, Hammad 2003). It is based on a collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of sociologist-architects, anthropologists and urban planners involved in a project for the upgrading of the largest Western-European public housing neighbourhood (about 28.000 inhabitants), located on the outskirts of the city of Rome.

Il contributo si colloca all’interno delle attività di ricerca nazionale e internazionale che le autrici stanno affrontando da anni sul tema delle politiche abitative e dell’inclusione sociale avviate, in diversi contesti insediativi, nell’ambito delle più ampie strategie di rigenerazione urbana promosse dalle amministrazioni locali.
