Pyrgi. Analysis of possible climatic effects on a coastal archaeological site

This work refers to an interdisciplinary study on the archaeological site of
Pyrgi, an Etruscan harbour still under excavation, located on the Lazio’s coast in Santa
Severa, in the province of Rome. The site in question is subject to frequent flooding which
compromises its accessibility and delays the archaeological excavation operations. The
study is based on the combined use of geomatic technologies, meteorological and climatic
models, and hydrogeological knowledge of the examined site, to have a global view of the

Dense georadar survey for a large-scale reconstruction of the archaeological site of Pyrgi (Santa Severa, Rome)

The Etruscan site of Pyrgi extended over 10 ha along the Tyrrhenian coastline. Fieldwork has so far brought to light the sanctuary and a ceremonial complex at the southern edge of the settlement, whereas additional evidence is provided by a section cut by sea erosion across the site. The archaeological layer is about 2 m thick and includes dry masonry buildings arranged into lots; the most superficial features are disturbed by deep agricultural activities and the top layer includes scattered building material (limestone and tuff blocks).

Pyrgi, harbour and sanctuary of Caere. Landscape, urbanistic planning and architectural features

The overall investigation of the different districts of an Etruscan settlement is an extremely rare circumstance. The study of the urbanistic asset of Pyrgi's settlement and of the arrangement of the sacred areas is favoured by their abandonment after the phase of Romanization and by the possibility of performing large-scale research over its territory.
