reconciliation

Visualizing co-phylogenetic reconciliations

We introduce a hybrid metaphor for the visualization of the reconciliations of co-phylogenetic trees, that are mappings among the nodes of two trees. The typical application is the visualization of the co-evolution of hosts and parasites in biology. Our strategy combines a space-filling and a node-link approach. Differently from traditional meth- ods, it guarantees an unambiguous and ‘downward’ representation when- ever the reconciliation is time-consistent (i.e., meaningful).

Sentencing practice and the contribution of international criminal tribunals to the maintenance of peace

This article explores the assumption according to which international criminal justice is meant to ensure international peace and security by analysing the sentencing practice of the ad hoc tribunals, the Special Court for the Sierra Leone and the International Criminal Court. Despite common references to the contribution that international criminal justice may give to the restoration of peace and reconciliation, sentencing practice shows that those broad goals have no legal impact on the determination of international sentences.

The making of a civic discourse on controversial historical past: From denial to parrhesia | [Faire un discours civique sur le passé historique controversé: Du déni à la parrhésie]

Abstract: This contribution discusses the pragmatic effects of different rhetoric strategies conveying evidence of past ingroup violence after a long lasting social denial (Cohen, 2001). In particular, a case study is presented on the making of a civic discourse on controversial historical past: war crimes committed by the Italian Army during the colonial invasion of Ethiopia (1935-36). Although very well proved (Del Boca, 2005), these facts were only recently inserted in Italian history textbooks (Leone & Mastrovito, 2010; Cajani, 2013).
