CT texture-based radiomics analysis of carotid arteries identifies vulnerable patients: a preliminary outcome study

Purpose: To assess the potential role of computed tomography (CT) texture analysis (CTTA) in identifying vulnerable patients with carotid artery atherosclerosis. Methods: In this case-control pilot study, 12 patients with carotid atherosclerosis and a subsequent history of transient ischemic attack or stroke were age and sex matched with 12 control cases with asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis (follow-up time 103.58 ± 9.2 months). CTTA was performed using a commercially available research software package (TexRAD) by an operator blinded to clinical data.

8th edition of AJCC/TNM staging system of thyroid cancer: what to expect (ITCO#2)

The 8th edition of AJCC/TNM staging system for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has recently been published. The aim of this study was to compare AJCC/TNM staging 7th and 8th edition in terms of tumor stage distribution in a multicenter, consecutive and prospective cohort of newly diagnosed DTC collected in a web-based observational database. Additional information concerning the extent of minimal extrathyroidal extension was collected. A cohort of 1765 DTC patients (76% females, median age 48 years, 94% papillary histotype) was analyzed. Younger patients (

Real-World Performance of the American Thyroid Association Risk Estimates in Predicting 1-Year Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Outcomes: A Prospective Multicenter Study of 2000 Patients

Background: One of the most widely used risk stratification systems for estimating individual patients' risk of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) persistence or recurrence is proposed by the American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines. The 2015 revision, that has increased the number of patients considered at low or intermediate risk, has been validated in several retrospective, single referral-center studies.

Selective use of radioactive iodine therapy for papillary thyroid cancers with low or lower-intermediate recurrence risk

Context: Current guidelines recommend a selective use of radioiodine treatment (RAI) for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC).

Objective: To determine how policy changes affect the use of RAI and the short-term outcomes of patients.

Design: Retrospective analysis of longitudinal data.

Setting: Academic referral center.

Subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator in patients with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. results from an Italian multicenter registry

Background: Despite expanding indication of the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) in clinical practice, limited data exists on safety and efficacy of S-ICD in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) patients. The aim of this multicenter study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of S-ICD in ARVC patients. Methods: The study population included 44 consecutive patients with definite ARVC diagnosis according to the 2010 ITF criteria (57% male, mean age 37 ± 17 years [range 10–75 years]) who received an S-ICD.

Early or deferred cardiovascular magnetic resonance after ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction for effective risk stratification

In ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) holds the potentiality to improve risk stratification in addition to Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) risk score. Nevertheless, the optimal timing for CMR after STEMI remains poorly defined. We aim at comparing the prognostic performance of three stratification strategies according to the timing of CMR after STEMI.
