Statins and muscle pain

Introduction: Statins remain among the most frequently prescribed drugs and constitute a cornerstone in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. However, muscle symptoms are often reported from patients on statins. Muscle symptoms are frequently reported as adverse events associated with statin therapy. Areas covered: In the present narrative review, statin-associated muscle pain is discussed. It elucidates potential mechanisms and possible targets for management.

Alemtuzumab-induced thyroid events in multiple sclerosis. A systematic review and meta-analysis

Autoimmune thyroid events (ATEs) are common side effects after alemtuzumab (ALZ) therapy in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Our purpose was to reach more robust evidence on prevalence and outcome of the spectrum of alemtuzumab-induced autoimmune thyroid events in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Real-world effectiveness and tolerability of carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine in 354 patients with trigeminal neuralgia

Background: It is widely agreed that carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine are highly effective in
the long-term treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. However, the tolerability of these drugs across
the different aetiologies of trigeminal neuralgia is still undetermined.
Methods: In this retrospective, real-world study, we assessed the effectiveness and tolerability of
carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine in a large cohort of patients with classical (254 patients),
secondary (60 patients) and idiopathic (40 patients) trigeminal neuralgia. We analysed data using

Efficacy and safety of finasteride (5 alpha-reductase inhibitor) monotherapy in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. a critical review of the literature

Combination therapy with 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor (5-ARI) and alpha-blocker can be considered as a gold standard intervention for medical management of lower urinary tract symptoms related to benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH). On the other hand, 5-ARI monotherapy and in particular Finasteride alone is currently getting focus of attention especially due to lack of systematic reviews investigating efficacy outcomes and/or adverse events associated.

Sustainability through unsustainability? Unintended consequences and emancipatory catastrophism

Based on Beck’s sociological theory, the goal of this chapter is to point out a specific implication of the role of unintended dynamics in social change: what Albert O. Hirschman called “blessings in disguise”2—the concept of emancipatory catastrophism. This concept refers to the hidden emancipatory side effects of global risk. Beck’s argument is that modern environmental catastrophes may ironically have the potential to bring about major, constructive changes in the way social actors organize their lives and societies.

Investigating effectiveness of on-street parking pricing schemes in urban areas. An empirical study in Rome

Management of on-street parking is a long-standing issue, impacting on livability of urban environments, and against which there is not a common solving approach. According to an extensive literature review, the price elasticity of parking demand widely ranges from −0.14 to −1.02. Besides, the existing gap between the theoretical background and parking practices implemented by cities does not allow framing local experiences into a systemic view. The above confirms the multifaceted and complex nature of such topic.
