Medical student ultrasound education, a WFUMB position paper, Part II. A consensus statement by ultrasound societies

Ultrasound is becoming a fundamental first-line diagnostic tool for most medical specialties and an innovative tool to teach anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to undergraduate and graduate students. However, availability of structured training programs during medical school is lagging behind and many physicians still acquire all their ultrasound skills during postgraduate training. There is wide variation in medical student ultrasound education worldwide.

Promoting 21st century skills in higher education through collaboration and activities

The paper presents a model of university teaching where students are involved in concrete activities and collaborate while developing key competences for the academic and working future. 52 students of the Degree Course in Psychology at the Sapienza University of Rome participated to the activity. The method of data collection and analysis combines qualitative and quantitative approach. Results show a general perception of skills enhancement and a good appreciation of the course, especially in comparison with traditional learning modes

Earnings inequality and workers’ skills in Italy

The increasing trend of earnings inequality observed in many countries is usually ascribed to a higher premium to skills, commonly proxied by education. Focusing on Italy, a country characterized by a steep rise in earnings inequality since the ‘90 s, we aim at verifying whether this trend is attributable to education. Making use of administrative data about private employees, we carry out Theil decompositions and estimate wage equations to investigate how much of this trend is linked with education and other observable worker's and firm's characteristics.

The dynamics of profits and wages. technology, offshoring and demand

This article explores the impact of innovation, offshoring and demand on profits and wage dynamics. Empirical analysis is performed on a panel of 37 industries (1995–2010) across five European countries. Our identification strategy relies on instrumental variables and recently proposed heteroskedasticity-based instruments. Additionally, we perform sensitivity analysis to account for omitted variables bias. The main results of our study can be summed up in three points. First, it highlights the contrasting effects of R&D and offshoring as wage determinants.
