Detection of age-related hearing losses (Arhl) via transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions

Purpose: The objective of the study was to identify subjects presenting hearing deficits, specifically age-related hearing losses (ARHL), via objective assessment methodologies. Materials and Methods: Initially, 259 subjects (165 men, 94 women) were enrolled in the study. After the application of inclusion criteria, the final number was reduced to 88 subjects (49.8 ± 19.1 ys) subdivided into 64 normal and 83 ARHL cases. The subjects were assessed with traditional audiometry tests and with transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs).

Subclinical cochlear dysfunction in newly diagnosed relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis

Background: Hearing impairment in multiple sclerosis has long been considered a process mainly related to the central auditory system. However, increasing evidence also suggests a peripheral involvement of the inner ear. The objective of this study was to investigate subclinical cochlear dysfunction and possible correlation with disease severity in untreated newly diagnosed multiple sclerosis patients using transient-evoked and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions.

Intestinal perforation after surgical treatment for incisional hernia. iatrogenic or idiopathic?

Intestinal perforation (IP) is a life-threatening gastroenterological condition requiring urgent surgical care, which may present itself as an uncommon complication following incisional hernia repair surgery, most often because of iatrogenic traumatism occurring during the procedure. However, we report a case where a spontaneous onset can be hypothesised. A 60-years-old patient underwent repair of an abdominal laparocele, through rectus abdominis muscle plasty, 5 years after development of an incisional hernia due to exploratory laparotomy for the treatment of acute appendicitis.
