Proceedings of the signature series event of the international society for cellular therapy. "Advancements in cellular therapies and regenerative medicine in digestive diseases" London, United Kingdom, May 3, 2017

A summary of the First Signature Series Event, "Advancements in Cellular Therapies and Regenerative Medicine for Digestive Diseases," held on May 3, 2017, in London, United Kingdom, is presented. Twelve speakers from three continents covered major topics in the areas of cellular therapy and regenerative medicine applied to liver and gastrointestinal medicine as well as to diabetes mellitus.

Recurrence of Hepatitis B Infection in Liver Transplant Patients Receiving Long-Term Hepatitis B Immunoglobulin Prophylaxis

BACKGROUND Long-term real-world data are relatively sparse regarding recurrence of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection after liver transplantation using hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIg) and nucleos(t)ide analogue (NUC) prophylaxis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from 371 adults transplanted for HBV-related disease at 20 European centers and given HBIg for ³12 months ± NUC therapy were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS HBIg comprised Hepatect® (iv HBIgB; n=299), subcutaneous Zutectra® (sc HBIg, n=236), and other HBIg preparations (n=130); 93.5% received NUC therapy.

A National Mandatory-Split Liver Policy: A Report from the Italian Experience

To implement split liver transplantation(SLT) a mandatory-split policy has been adopted in Italy since August 2015: donors aged 18-50 years at standard-risk are offered for SLT, resulting in a left-lateral segment(LLS) graft for children and an extended-right graft(ERG) for adults. We aim to analyse the impact of the new mandatory-split policy on liver transplantation(LT)-waiting list and SLT outcomes, compared to old allocation policy.

Impact of remnant vital tissue after locoregional treatment and liver transplant in hepatocellular cancer patients. A multicentre cohort study

The role of pathological findings after locoregional treatments as predictors of hepatocellular cancer recurrence after liver transplantation has been poorly addressed. The aim of the study was to identify the role of remnant vital tissue (RVT) of the target lesion in predicting hepatocellular cancer recurrence. Two hundred and seventy-six patients firstly undergoing locoregional treatment and then transplanted between January 2010 and December 2015 in four European Transplant Centres (i.e.

Parathyroid reimplantation with PR-FaST technique in unselected patients during thyroidectomy. A case series with long term follow up confirming graft vitality and parathormone production

INTRODUCTION:
Parathyroid damage or unintentional excision still affect thyroid surgery and may cause permanent hypoparathyroidism. The only way to recover the excised or ischemic gland functionality is still reimplantation. Many sites of reimplantation have been described, each of one showing both advantages and drawbacks. The aim of this study is to verify results of a new procedure called PR-FaST: Parathyroid Reimplantation in Forearm Subcutaneous Tissue, in a series of unselected patients after long-term follow-up.

Colistin-based treatment of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacterial pulmonary infections after lung transplantation

Background: Lung transplantation (LT) is a viable option for a select group of patients with end-stage lung disease. However, infections are a major complication after LT, accounting for significant morbidity and mortality. Several germs may be responsible; multidrug-resistant Gram-negative (MDR-GN) bacteria are emerging. Colistin is widely used in the treatment of these infections and is administered by inhalation and/or parenterally. At our institution, in patients with tracheostomy, colistin is administered by direct instillation in the airway during bronchoscopy.
