Investigating the introduction of Italian culture into Late Qing China through some foreign travel diaries (1867-1897): What culture? About what Italy? By what China?

This paper aims to provide an overview of the information on Italian culture available in diaries written from 1867 to 1897 by the official delegates of the Qing government.

Leandro di Santa Cecilia

Biography, and analysis of his works, of the Carmelite Leandro di Santa Cecilia (Giovanni Augusto Cottalorda), missionary in different countries of the Muslim Orient from 1732 to 1751. Leandro described his stay in the Levant in his three books: Palestina (Rome, 1753), Persia (Rome, 1757), and Mesopotamia (Rome, 1757), which have been analyzed especially in order to understand Leandro's attitude towards the culture and the material life of countries of mission, and the information he gives concerning the Islamic religion.
