Curcumin dietary supplementation ameliorates disease phenotype in an animal model of Huntington's disease

Huntington's disease (HD) has traditionally been described as a disorder purely of the brain, however evidence indicates that peripheral abnormalities are also commonly seen. Among others, severe unintended body weight loss represents a prevalent and often debilitating feature of HD pathology, with no therapies available. It correlates with disease progression and significantly affects the quality of life of HD patients.

Safety and efficacy of a new swallowable intragastric balloon not needing endoscopy: early italian experience

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new intragastric balloon (Elipse™ Balloon, Allurion Technologies, Natick, MA USA) not needing endoscopy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The balloon was swallowed under fluoroscopy in 38 consecutive patients (F/M 28/10, mean age 46.4 ± 10.6 years, mean weight 109.7 ± 21.9 kg, and mean body mass index (BMI) 38.6 ± 6.7 kg/m2). After 4 months, the balloon spontaneously emptied and it was excreted through the digestive tract without upper endoscopy.

Weight loss and body mass index in advanced gastric cancer patients treated with second-line ramucirumab. a real-life multicentre study

Aims and methods: This multicenter retrospective study aims to evaluate the correlations between Body Weight Loss (BWL), Body Mass Index (BMI) and clinical outcomes (ORR, PFS, and OS) of advanced gastric cancer (aGC) patients treated with second-line ramucirumab-based therapy in a “real-life” setting. Results: From December 2014 to October 2018, 101 consecutive aGC patients progressed to a first-line chemotherapy were treated with ramucirumab alone (10.9%) or in combination with paclitaxel (89.1%). Median BMI was 21.2 kg/m2 and mBWL since first-line treatment commencement was 4.5%.

Primary Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Results in Greater Weight Loss at 15-Year Follow-Up Compared with Secondary Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass After Failure of Gastric Band or Mason McLean Vertical Gastroplasty

Purpose: The aim of the study is to compare the outcomes of patients treated with secondary Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) after adjustable gastric banding (AGB) or vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) with those of patients having primary RYGB. Materials and Methods: Patients undergoing secondary RYGB after AGB or VBG between 1997 and 2004 with a minimal follow-up of 15 years were matched using a propensity score (according to gender, age, BMI, duration of follow-up) with comparable patients who underwent primary RYGB.

Suspected adverse reactions associated with herbal products used for weight loss: spontaneous reports from the Italian Phytovigilance System

Purpose: Overweight and obesity represent worldwide a rising health problem. In this context, dietary supplements and herbal preparations are often used as self-medication for weight loss. The aim of this study was to describe the safety profile of dietary supplements for weight control by analyzing spontaneous reports of suspected adverse reactions (ARs) received by the Italian Phytovigilance System, from July 2010 to October 2017.

A randomized double-blind, cross-over trial of very low-calorie diet in overweight migraine patients. A possible role for ketones?

Here we aimed at determining the therapeutic effect of a very low-calorie diet in overweight episodic migraine patients during a weight-loss intervention in which subjects alternated randomly between a very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) and a very low-calorie non-ketogenic diet (VLCnKD) each for one month. In a nutritional program, 35 overweight obese migraine sufferers were allocated blindly to 1-month successive VLCKD or VLCnKD in random order (VLCKD-VLCnKD or VLCnKD-VLCD).

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major cause of liver disease. Very low-calorie ketogenic diets (VLCKD) represent a feasible treatment as they induce profound weight loss and insulin resistance (IR) improvement. Despite the recognized benefits on NAFLD deriving from pharmacological administration of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), whose endogenous counterpart is a marker of liver injury, little is known about its physiology in humans.
