This paper focuses on Persius 5,43, a difficult and controversial line. Some clarification is gained by a focused study of line 42, but a closer examination of line 43 makes clear that the reading of the manuscripts is corrupt. Drawing on important philosophical and literary models behind the larger context of lines 36-44, a twofold emendation is proposed, shedding light both on the line itself and the context in which it occurs.
