Although the archaeological work on the field is still in progress in Abu Tbeirah and eloquent epigraphic evidence lacks so far (apart from some uncertain fragments and inscribed bricks), the contribute would like to highlight some specific clues the site offers in order to put forward some considerations about its ancient geographical and historical setting, as this comes out from the written documentation on the area - its proximity to the ancient capital city of Ur (a distance almost equivalent to that between Ur and Eridu) being the most evident aspect - and in doing so to point out the “political” background of the Sumerian city. On the base of this description a group of toponyms is sorted out as possible candidates of the ancient name of our site.
