The harbor of Abu Tbeirah and the Southern Mesopotamian landscape in the 3rd mill. BC: preliminary considerations

Since 2012 seven excavation campaigns have been carried out at Abu Tbeirah, a 3rd millennium BC city located near Nasiriyah (Dhi Qar, southern Iraq). The paper will introduce the preliminary results of the 2016-2017 excavations of the harbor of Abu Tbeirah, a huge artificial basin surrounded by a rampart and linked to the main canal crossing the mound; a new hypothesis on the natural environment surrounding the city in antiquity is put forth.
