Cannellini-Lingot beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) have been analyzed as optical collectors for ultra-weak photon emission (UPE) during the very early germination process. The optical path of the internally-generated light was investigated using a custom ray-tracing numerical code. Specific light maps reveal an optical focus in correspondence with the plumula and radical tip regions of the embryo. Endoscopic photon counting of the emission confirmed the numerical prediction. The whole seed shape has been geometrically studied and represented in terms of parabolic surfaces; a specific asymmetric morphology is the consequence of the asymmetric distribution of the embryo inside the seed; it seems to be functional for collecting and focusing UPE on the environmentally sensitive plumula and radical tip.
