The presence of asbestos and other contaminants inside demolition waste (DW) negatively affects the recycling process of concrete and other construction materials due to health, environmental, and technical issues. Detection/recognition strategies of asbestos containing materials (ACM) and other contaminants in concrete aggregates from DW can be utilized in order to control their presence and to eventually remove them during recycling processes. Innovative analytical tools, based on micro-X-ray fluorescence and hyperspectral imaging, to be applied both “in situ” and at processing plant scale for the identification and classification of ACM and other contaminants are introduced.
