After recalling the different Latin translations of Psalm 72, 7 the purpose of the first paragraph of this paper is to provide an overview of its different types of reading used in the Middle Ages (dispositio cordis, affectus cordis, cogitatio cordis). The reported examples come from Bernard of Clairvaux, Isaac of Stella and others. The last paragraph describes the patristic and medieval uses of the metaphor of the book of the heart (liber cordis) with particular reference to Bernard of Clairvaux and Alan of Lille.
