Intra-Articular Temporo-Mandibular Disorders (TMD) are characterized by displacement of the disc that causes the condyles to slip back over the disc thus resulting in TMJ discal damage and erosion of the condyle's bone. The etiology of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is multidimensional: biomechanical, neuromuscular, bio-psychosocial and biological factors may contribute to the disorder.

Surgical management of extrafollicular variant of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in the maxillary posterior region

Background. Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a relatively uncommon benign neoplasm of odontogenic epithelial origin, accounting for less than 5% of odontogenic tumors. Case Report. The reported case describes morphological characteristics, clinical course, radiographic and histopathological features, and surgical therapy of an extrafollicular variant of AOT in the maxillary posterior region. An asymptomatic swelling on the left side in the posterior region of the maxilla, gradually increased since approximately 12 months, developed in a 16-year-old Caucasian female patient.

Medicolegal considerations involving iatrogenic lingual nerve damage

The aim of this review is to improve risk management strategies through analysis of the anatomic, semeiotic, and medicolegal aspects that characterize iatrogenic lingual nerve damage (LND) and its legal consequences in the case of legal proceedings for a claim for compensation. In dental practice, LND can be caused by local or general anesthesia or by mechanical, chemical, or thermal mechanisms. A certain postoperative identification of LND etiopathogenesis is often very challenging because it can be difficult to show at what time the damage occurred and which mechanism actually caused it.

An unusual intraoral lipoma: a case report and literature review

BACKGROUND Lipoma is a painless tumor derived from mesenchymal connective tissue. It manifests itself on soft tissue and is characterized by a slow and circumscribed growth. Its incidence in the oral cavity is relatively low (1-4%). Despite the fact that it poses very little threat, as it is a benign form, as opposed to liposarcomas, its position in the oral cavity can create the prerequisite conditions for the buccal mucosa to be continuously traumatised by chewing and thus be altered.

Er:YAG laser, piezosurgery, and surgical drill for bone decortication during orthodontic mini-implant insertion: primary stability analysis-an animal study

It is important to identify factors that affect primary stability of orthodontic mini-implants because it determines the success of treatment. We assessed mini-implant primary stability (initial mechanical engagement with the bone) placed in pig jaws. We also assessed mini-implant insertion failure rate (mini-implant fracture, mini-implants to root contact). A total of 80 taper-shaped mini-implants (Absoanchor® Model SH1312-6; Dentos Inc., Daegu, Korea) 6 mm long with a diameter of 1.1 mm were used.

Nanotechnology in oral cavity carcinoma: recent trends and treatment opportunities

Oral cavity carcinoma (OCC) remains an ongoing public health problem. Emerging nanotechnology provides alternative treatment approaches. This review covers the up-to-date literature in the human OCC treatment field. We explored the growing body of evidence to reveal novel and highly promising diagnostic and therapeutic applications of nanotechnology in this field. Various types of nanoparticles have been tested for applications in OCC. Imaging modalities in addition to nanocarriers are discussed.

Bone dehiscences and fenestrations of the anterior mandibular facial bone wall: a retrospective cone beam computed tomography study

BACKGROUND: To calculate the prevalence of dehiscences and fenestrations and measure the buccal alveolar bone width overlying healthy mandibular incisors and canines. METHODS: Cone beam computerized tomographies (CBCTs) from patients aged 18 to 30 years were selected from a private database. The thickness of buccal bone in the sagittal scan was measured perpendicular to the long axis of 6 teeth at two locations: at the crest level and at the mid-root level. A single calibrated examiner performed all measurements. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed.

Accuracy of a novel trace-registration method for dynamic navigation surgery.

A technology called Trace Registration (TR) has been introduced to allow dynamic navigation of implant placement without the need for a thermoplastic stent. This study was undertaken in order to validate the accuracy of the TR protocol for dynamically guided implant surgery. A retrospective, observational, in vivo study was performed using dynamic navigation via the TR protocol. The preoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) plan was superimposed and registered (aligned) with the postoperative CBCT scan to assess accuracy parameters.

Maxillo-mandibular reconstruction in pediatric patients: how to do it?

Maxillo-mandibular reconstruction in pediatric patients involves particular functional and cosmetic implications. Attention is required for the craniofacial growth over time, involvement of the permanent dentition, facial symmetry, and donor site morbidity. Our aim is to identify the best reconstructive options for maxilla-mandibular defects in children (<18 years) based on our experience with 25 pediatric patients. We believe that reconstruction has to be performed at the same time as resection in pediatric patients.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma in a patient previously treated for an intestinal-type adenocarcinoma: metachronous neoplasms or recurrence of a different tumor type?

A case of a sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma occurring 2 years after a successfully surgically treated intestinal-type adenocarcinoma has never been reported. Treatment modality of paranasal sinus cancer strictly depends on histology so it is important to recognize a different tumor type in the follow-up of these patients
