Defense, adaptation and relocation. Three strategies for urban planning of coastal areas at risk of flooding

The term Anthropocene was coined in the 80s of last century to indicate the current geological era. This stands out from those that preceded it for the decisive impact of man on the climate and the environment. In order to understand how it is possible to direct a sustainable development of the planet, it is worth considering that for at least twenty years there has been a considerable increase in the world population and that this tends to concentrate, with increasing percentages, in urban areas.

Public space and climate change. Innovative planning approaches for the urban regeneration of coastal cities

The recent news highlights that one of the most evident manifestations of climate changes on the
territory is represented by coastal flooding as a result of the combined effect of sea level rise and the
increasingly frequent and violent rainfall.
Cases such as the massive flood that hit Manhattan, following Hurricane Sandy in 2014, require a
deep reflection on how to guide the sustainable development of coastal areas in urban areas, while
at the same time managing to guarantee a quality public space.

Eco-Distretto | Eco-District

Environmental harshness and unpredictability, life history, and social and academic behavior of adolescents in nine countries

Safety is essential for life. To survive, humans and other animals have developed sets of psychological and physiological adaptations known as life history (LH) tradeoff strategies in response to various safety constraints. Evolutionarily selected LH strategies in turn regulate development and behavior to optimize survival under prevailing safety conditions. The present study tested LH hypotheses concerning safety based on a 6-year longitudinal sample of 1,245 adolescents and their parents from 9 countries.

Anodal tDCS over the right parietal but not frontal cortex enhances the ability to overcome task set inhibition during task switching

Switching between tasks requires individuals to inhibit mental representations of the previous task demands and to activate representations of the new task demands. The inhibition of the executed task remains active for a while so that when the inhibited task set must be re-activated shortly after, the need to overcome residual task set inhibition leads to behavioral costs.

Environmental Burkholderia cenocepacia Strain Enhances Fitness by Serial Passages during Long-Term Chronic Airways Infection in Mice

Burkholderia cenocepacia is an important opportunistic pathogen in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, and has also been isolated from natural environments. In previous work, we explored the virulence and pathogenic potential of environmental B. cenocepacia strains and demonstrated that they do not differ from clinical strains in some pathogenic traits. Here, we investigated the ability of the environmental B. cenocepacia Mex1 strain, isolated from the maize rhizosphere, to persist and increase its virulence after serial passages in a mouse model of chronic infection.
