BacHBerry: BACterial Hosts for production of Bioactive phenolics from bERRY fruits

BACterial Hosts for production of Bioactive phenolics from bERRY fruits (BacHBerry) was a 3-year project funded by the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Union that ran between November 2013 and October 2016. The overall aim of the project was to establish a sustainable and economically-feasible strategy for the production of novel high-value phenolic compounds isolated from berry fruits using bacterial platforms.

Automated segmentation of colorectal tumor in 3D MRI Using 3D multiscale densely connected convolutional neural network

The main goal of this work is to automatically segment colorectal tumors in 3D T2-weighted (T2w) MRI with reasonable accuracy. For such a purpose, a novel deep learning-based algorithm suited for volumetric colorectal tumor segmentation is proposed. The proposed CNN architecture, based on densely connected neural network, contains multiscale dense interconnectivity between layers of fine and coarse scales, thus leveraging multiscale contextual information in the network to get better flow of information throughout the network.

Bloch surface wave enhanced biosensor for the direct detection of angiopoietin-2 tumor biomarker in human plasma

Quantitative detection of angiogenic biomarkers provides a powerful tool to diagnose cancers in early stages and to follow its progression during therapy. Conventional tests require trained personnel, dedicated laboratory equipment and are generally time-consuming. Herein, we propose our developed biosensing platform as a useful tool for a rapid determination of Angiopoietin-2 biomarker directly from patient plasma within 30 minutes, without any sample preparation or dilution.

Improved DET communication between cellobiose dehydrogenase and a gold electrode modified with a rigid self-assembled monolayer and a green metal nanoparticles: the role of an ordered nanostructuration

Efficient direct electron transfer (DET) between cellobiose dehydrogenase from Corynascus thermophilus (CtCDH) and a novel gold electrode platform, obtained by covalent linking of green AuNPs and AgNPs modified with a dithiol self-assembled monolayer, consisting of biphenyl-4,4?-dithiol (BPDT), was presented. The green AuNPs and AgNPs were synthesized using quercetin as reducing agent at room temperature. TEM experiments showed that the AuNPs and AgNPs were circular in shape with an average diameter of 5 and 8 nm, respectively.

The effect of fatty acid binding in the acid isomerizations of albumin investigated with a continuous acidification method

The protein Human Serum Albumin (HSA) is known to undergo conformational transitions towards partially unfolded forms triggered by acidification below pH 4.5. The extent of Fatty Acids (FA) binding has been thought to have an impact on the conformational equilibrium between the native and acid forms and to be a possible explanation for the observation of more than one band in early electrophoretic migration experiments at pH 4.

AuNPs-functionalized PANABA-MWCNTs nanocomposite-based impedimetric immunosensor for 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid detection

In this work, we developed an impedimetric label-free immunosensor for the detection of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxy Acetic Acid (2,4-D) herbicide either in standard solution and spiked real samples. For this purpose, we prepared by electropolymerization a conductive polymer poly-(aniline-co-3-aminobenzoic acid) (PANABA) then we immobilized anti-2,4-D antibody onto a nanocomposite AuNPs-PANABA-MWCNTs employing the carboxylic moieties as anchor sites.

Volatile fraction analysis by HS-SPME/GC-MS and chemometric modeling for traceability of apples cultivated in the Northeast Italy

The present study aimed at characterising the flavour composition of apple cultivars grown in the Northeast Italy through different cultivation methods, by combining Head Space-Solid Phase Micro Extraction/Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) analysis of volatile fraction with chemometric tools for class modeling. In order to represent the overall production in the target area, the investigation included 42 apples varieties consisting of ancient, non-native and new hybrid cultivars grown in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Alto Adige-South Tyrol, respectively.

Phosphatidylcholine determination in dietary supplement by coupled enzymes immobilized in a single bioreactor

A rapid and selective method for the determination of phosphatidylcholine (PC) is described. It is based on the use of a single packed bed reactor in which phospholipase C, alkaline phosphatase and choline oxidase are co-immobilized on long chain-alkylamino controlled pore glass. The detection of hydrogen peroxide, that is the final product of subsequent enzymatic reactions occurring within the bioreactor, is used for the determination of PC in a dietary supplement. The results of triplicate analysis show a coefficient of variation of 5%.

Taurine grafting and collagen adsorption on PLLA films improve human primary chondrocyte adhesion and growth

Biocompatible and degradable poly(?-hydroxy acids) are one of the most widely used materials in scaffolds for tissue engineering. Nevertheless, they often need surface modification to improve interaction with cells. Aminolysis is a common method to increase the polymer hydrophilicity and to introduce surface functional groups, able to covalently link or absorb, through electrostatic interaction, bioactive molecules or macromolecules. For this purpose, multi-functional amines, such as diethylenediamine or hexamethylenediamine are used.
