Minor salivary gland sialolithiasis: a clinical diagnostic challenge

Sialolithiasis is a non-neoplastic salivary gland disease that rarely affects the minor salivary glands. There are no guidelines in the literature which can suggest which is the best surgical approach to treat Minor Salivary Glands Sialolithiasis (MSGL). The present case was of a 48-year-old male patient complaining of painful swelling localized in the left back-commissural zone which was 0.5 mm in diameter, for which surgical enucleation approach was done and in that some small calcific masses ranging from 0.2 to 4 mm in diameter were found.

A study of quiet eye's phenomenon in the shooting section of “laser run” of modern pentathlon

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of the Quiet eye (QE) phenomenon on performances during the shooting section of “Laser Run” of Modern Pentathlon, in two samples of athletes (novices and experts). The “Laser Run” consists of running and shooting activities. The study involved 18 experienced athletes of the Italian National Team of Modern Pentathlon (i.e., “elite” group) and 18 young and nonexpert athletes of a local Pentathlon club (i.e., “novice” group).

Proenkephalin, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, and estimated glomerular filtration rates in patients with sepsis

Background: Proenkephalin (PENK) has been suggested as a novel biomarker for kidney function. We investigated the diagnostic and prognostic utility of plasma PENK in comparison with neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and estimated glomerular filtration rates (EGFR) in septic patients. Methods: A total of 167 septic patients were enrolled: 99 with sepsis, 37 with septic shock, and 31 with suspected sepsis.

Comparison between soluble ST2 and high-sensitivity troponin I in predicting short-term mortality for patients presenting to the Emergency Department with chest pain

Background: High-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) and the soluble isoform of suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (sST2) are useful prognostic biomarkers in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of this study was to test the short term prognostic value of sST2 compared with hs-cTnI in patients with chest pain. Methods: Assays for hs-cTnI and sST2 were performed in 157 patients admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) for chest pain at arrival. In-hospital and 30-day follow-up mortalities were assessed.

Src nuclear localization and its prognostic relevance in human osteosarcoma

Modulation of the oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation by endocannabinoids and their lipid analogues

Growing evidence supports the pivotal role played by oxidative stress in tissue injury development, thus resulting in several pathologies including cardiovascular, renal, neuropsychiatric, and neurodegenerative disorders, all characterized by an altered oxidative status. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and lipid peroxidation-derived reactive aldehydes including acrolein, malondialdehyde, and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, among others, are the main responsible for cellular and tissue damages occurring in redox-dependent processes.

The sodium salt of the enantiomers of ricobendazole: preparation, solubility and chiroptical properties

Albendazole (ABZ) is a sulfanyl-benzimidazole anthelmintic drug used worldwide in the treatment and prevention of parasitic diseases in animals and humans. Following oral administration, ABZ is rapidly oxidized into the pharmacologically active chiral sulfoxide metabolite known as ricobendazole (RBZ). As its achiral precursor, RBZ shows very low intestinal absorption due to its poor solubility in water (0.06 mg mL?1). To the best of our knowledge, there is no known example in human medicine of a water-soluble salt form of racemic or enantiomerically pure RBZ.

Enantiomers of triclabendazole sulfoxide: analytical and semipreparative HPLC separation, absolute configuration assignment, and transformation into sodium salt

Direct HPLC separation of the enantiomers of triclabendazole sulfoxide (TCBZ-SO), which is the main metabolite of the anthelmintic drug triclabendazole, was carried out using the polysaccharide-based Chiralpak AS-H and Chiralpak IF-3 chiral stationary phases (CSPs). The chromatographic behaviour of both CSPs was evaluated and compared using normal-phase and reversed-phase eluents at different column temperatures.

3,5-Dinitrobenzoyl-9-amino-9-deoxy-9-epiquinine as Pirkle-Anion Exchange Hybrid-Type Chiral Selector in High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

introducing 9-amino-9-deoxy-9-epiquinine, one of the
most versatile organocatalysts in asymmetric synthesis, as

The interplay between TGF-β-stimulated TSC22 domain family proteins regulates cell-cycle dynamics in medulloblastoma cells

Proteins belonging to the TGFβ-stimulated clone 22 domain (TSC22D) family display a repertoire of activities, regulating cell proliferation and differentiation. The tumor suppressor activity of the first identified member of the family, TSC22D1 (formerly named TSC-22), has been extensively studied, but afterward a longer isoform encoded by the same gene turned out to play an opposite role. We have previously characterized the role of TSC22D1 and TSC22D4 in cell differentiation using granule neurons (GNs) isolated from the mouse cerebellum.
