This contribution aims at making an overview of the most recent activities/contributions in education in the control field by members of the Technical Committee Nonlinear Systems, in order to share the best practices and ideas in the community, as well as to investigate into the level of awareness, interest and involvement of the TC members in several aspects concerning education. The October first 2017 is the opening day of the three-years European project Codes – Communication Diversity Solidarity. Its goal is to design a course focused on intercultural competencies. Such course is intended to train future experts in this field that will be working as “attachés of the communication for cultural diversity” in several types of organizations.

The more global disorder progresses, the more important it is to remember the initiatives, large and small, that contribute to fueling that public sphere of knowledge that is naturally inclusive and transnational. IASSR Congresses, the first source for the following essays, are part of these initiatives, and behind their apparent lack of structure, there is the opportunity to broaden the comparison between disciplines and especially between the looks that characterize them in sometimes very different national contexts.

This Special Section collects a list of selected articles that were presented as papers during the Conference ‘Making Education through Culture. Making Culture through Education’ organised at the Department of Social Sciences of the University of Napoli ‘Federico II’ from 13rd to 16th October 2016, as a joint initiative of the groups of the sociology of education, and of the sociology of culture, media and communication of the Italian Sociological Association (AIS).
