Ferritin nanocages for protein delivery to tumor cells

The delivery of therapeutic proteins is one of the greatest challenges in the treatment of human diseases. In this frame, ferritins occupy a very special place. Thanks to their hollow spherical structure, they are used as modular nanocages for the delivery of anticancer drugs. More recently, the possibility of encapsulating even small proteins with enzymatic or cytotoxic activity is emerging. Among all ferritins, particular interest is paid to the Archaeoglobus fulgidus one, due to its peculiar ability to associate/dissociate in physiological conditions.

Treatment of pediatric restless legs syndrome

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is not uncommon in children with an estimated prevalence of 2%. There is clear evidence that RLS affects quality of life, sleep, cognition and behavior in children and adults. Although the diagnosis of RLS can be challenging in young children, the International Restless Legs Study Group (IRLSSG) has published guidelines for diagnosis which include description of symptoms in the child's own words. Once the diagnosis is made, treatment options must be explored. It is commonly accepted that non-pharmacological interventions be recommended to all affected families.

Dimethyl fumarate reduces microglia functional response to tissue damage and favors brain iron homeostasis

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is the only available approved drug for first line treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), a lethal condition impairing central nervous system (CNS). To date, however, little is known of its mechanisms of action. Only recently, it has been suggested that DMF exerts neuroprotective effects acting as an immunomodulator and that it may alter the activation state of microglia cells, crucial in MS pathogenesis. However, DMF effects on microglia functions are still not well determined.

Exploring the use of dimethyl fumarate as microglia modulator for neurodegenerative diseases treatment

The maintenance of redox homeostasis in the brain is critical for the prevention of the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Drugs acting on brain redox balance can be promising for the treatment of neurodegeneration. For more than four decades, dimethyl fumarate (DMF) and other derivatives of fumaric acid ester compounds have been shown to mitigate a number of pathological mechanisms associated with psoriasis and relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Serum ferritin as an independent risk factor for acute respiratory distress syndrome in COVID-19 patients in Rome Italy

Increased ferritin levels could be indicative of a strong inflammatory reaction in COVID-19 and recent studies suggest that increased levels of circulating ferritin levels play a critical role by contributing to the development of a cytokine storm. In this regard, ferritin evaluation could be an early, available and easy to use screening tool to assess the disease severity at the first admission in the emergency department. This test might be of crucial importance for the timely identification of patients at higher risk of an adverse outcome.
