Metabolomic Signature of Angiopoietin-Like Protein 3 Deficiency in Fasting and Postprandial State

Objective- Loss-of-function (LOF) variants in the ANGPTL3 (angiopoietin-like protein 3) have been associated with low levels of plasma lipoproteins and decreased coronary artery disease risk. We aimed to determine detailed metabolic effects of genetically induced ANGPTL3 deficiency in fasting and postprandial state. Approach and Results- We studied individuals carrying S17X LOF mutation in ANGPTL3 (6 homozygous and 32 heterozygous carriers) and 38 noncarriers. Nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomics was used to quantify 225 circulating metabolic measures.

Autophagy manipulation as a strategy for efficient anticancer therapies: possible consequences

Autophagy is a catabolic process whose activation may help cancer cells to adapt to cellular stress although, in some instances, it can induce cell death. Autophagy stimulation or inhibition has been considered an opportunity to treat cancer, especially in combination with anticancer therapies, although autophagy manipulation may be viewed as controversial. Thus, whether to induce or to inhibit autophagy may be the best option in the different cancer patients is still matter of debate.

Spectrum of mutations and long-term clinical outcomes in genetic chylomicronemia syndromes

OBJECTIVE: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) and multifactorial chylomicronemia syndrome (MCS) are the prototypes of monogenic and polygenic conditions underlying genetically based severe hypertriglyceridemia. These conditions have been only partially investigated so that a systematic comparison of their characteristics remains incomplete. We aim to compare genetic profiles and clinical outcomes in FCS and MCS.

Ecdysteroids as non-conventional anabolic agent: performance enhancement by ecdysterone supplementation in humans

Recent studies suggest that the anabolic effect of ecdysterone, a naturally occurring steroid hormone claimed to enhance physical performance, is mediated by estrogen receptor (ER) binding. In comparison with the prohibited anabolic agents (e.g., metandienone and others), ecdysterone revealed to be even more effective in a recent study performed in rats. However, scientific studies in humans are very rarely accessible. Thus, our project aimed at investigating the effects of ecdysterone-containing products on human sport exercise.

Cardiovascular features of possible autonomous cortisol secretion in patients with adrenal incidentalomas

Background: Low-grade incomplete post-dexamethasone cortisol suppression in patients with adrenal incidentalomas – recently defined as possible autonomous cortisol secretion (pACS) – has been associated with increased cardiovascular events and mortality. However, prospective studies documenting cardiac abnormalities in these patients are lacking. Subjects and methods: Between July 2016 and September 2017, 71 consecutive patients with adrenal lesions were prospectively screened for hypercortisolism by dexamethasone suppression test (NCT 02611258).

The short Synacthen (corticotropin) test can be used to predict recovery of hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis function

Context: The 250-mg short Synacthen (corticotropin) test (SST) is the most commonly used tool to assess hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function. There are many potentially reversible causes of adrenal insufficiency (AI), but no data to guide clinicians as to the frequency of repeat testing or likelihood of HPA axis recovery. Objective: To use the SST results to predict adrenal recovery. Design: A retrospective analysis of 1912 SSTs data. Patients: Seven hundred seventy-six patients with reversible causes of AI were identified who had at least two SSTs performed.

Vaccine boosters. Mandatory is not the only way, but it does seem to be an effective way

Postsurgical ultrasound evaluation of patients with prosthesis in acellular dermal matrix: results from monocentric experience

Mastectomy and breast prosthetic reconstruction is the most common surgical treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer. In the last few years, breast prosthetic augmentation in acellular dermal matrix (ADM) has been introduced. The aim of this study is to present our single-center experience in evaluating the outcome of patients who underwent breast reconstruction in ADM, using ultrasound (US) examination.

Defecatory dysfunction after colon cancer resection. The role of inferior mesenteric artery tie

Background: Although oncological results for resection of colon cancer with inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) ligation at its origin (high tie) or immediately below the left colic artery (low tie) are similar, injury of the superior hypogastric plexus may be caused when the IMA is tied at its origin, thus impairing defecatory functions. Aim: The importance of IMA tie location on defecatory dysfunction in patients undergoing laparoscopic sigmoidal resection without preoperative radiation therapy was studied.
