Quale Oriente? Quando la finzione diventa realtà

L’antico Oriente è stato spesso luogo di vicende storiche e religiose raccontate e musicate in opere teatrali. Ma quale era la conoscenza dell’Oriente antico prima dell’effettiva scoperta delle vestigia delle antiche civiltà orientali? Il 1842 segna di fatto la nascita dell’archeologia orientale con i primi scavi nella regione assira in Iraq settentrionale: da quel momento, l’Oriente non è più, o almeno non solamente, luogo mitico ed esotico, ma diventa luogo concreto e reale visibile e tangibile grazie ai lavori dei primi esploratori delle antiche colline.

Molecular genotyping of Echinococcus granulosus in the North of Iraq

Cystic echinococcosis/hydatidosis is an important cosmopolitan zoonotic disease that causes large economic losses and human suffering. The larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus are the etiological agents of cystic echinococcosis that showed different genotypes in different regions in the world. The present study was aimed at the detection of E. granulosus strains circulating in two cities from north of Iraq (Kirkuk and Sulaimania).

MAIKI Activities on the Paikuli Monument and Its Surroundings

Un team congiunto di ricercatori curdi e italiani guidati dall’autore di questo contributo lavora dal 2006 presso il Monumento di Pāikūlī nella provincia curdo-irachena di Sulaymāniya. Esso venne eretto per volontà del re Narseh nell’area, sita ai confini nord-orientali della provincia dell’Asōrestān, in cui aveva ricevuto giuramento di fedeltà da una delegazione di nobili e dignitari dell’Ērānšahr una volta asceso al trono sasanide in seguito alla vittoria in Armenia su Wahrām III.

The frst campaign at Eridu, April 2019 (Project AMEr)

The article presents the results of the frst campaign carried out at Eridu, entered (since 2016) in the World Heritage List of UNESCO, by the Iraqi-Italian-French mission led by F. D’Agostino and P. Quenet. The excavations of the limestone retaining wall at SW of Site (Mound) 1 and of the area outside the temenos where the Ubaid cemetery laid are introduced, together with the study of the epigraphic material found during the diggings. The geomagnetic and aerial survey with UAV (photogrammetry) of Sites 3, 4 and 5 are presented as well.

Palaeoenvironment, climate and land use in southern Mesopotamia/Nasiriyah area

This book presents the results of the archaeological activities and specialistic studies carried out at the site of Abu Tbeirah (Nasiriyah, Province of Dhi Qar, southern Iraq) by the Iraqi-Italian joint mission of the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage and of Sapienza, led by F. D’Agostino and L. Romano (Dipartimento – Istituto Italiano di Studi Orientali). Archaeological discoveries in the ancient state of Lagash. Results from the Italian excavations at Tell Zurghul / Nigin in Southern Iraq

The Italian archaeological project at Tell Zurghul is a joint archaeological expedition of Sapienza Università di Roma and the Università degli Studi di Perugia and started working at the site in 2015; three seasons of excavation have been conducted with three operations (Area A, Area B, and Area D) and a survey on the western edge of the site (Area C) (Figure 1).

Italian archaeological expedition to Nigin, Southern Iraq. New results from recent excavations

Tell Zurghul, the ancient Sumerian Nigin in the ancient State of Lagash, is currently excavated by a joint Italian archaeological expedition of Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Perugia since 2014. The paper presents the results of the most recent excavation campaigns carried out in 2017, covering two areas (A and B). Recent agreements with the Departments of Geology of both Perugia and Rome aimed at the study of the hydrogeological morphology of the site with a special focus on the investigation of the areas once covered by water, i.e.

The Italian Archaeological Excavations at Tell Zurghul, ancient Nigin, Iraq. Final Report of the Seasons 2015-2017

The Italian Archaeological Expedition to Nigin of Sapienza University of Rome and University of Perugia started excavations at Tell Zurghul in 2015: a survey and three excavations seasons were carried out in the period between 2016 and 2017. This volume presents the results of the archaeological explorations with the analysis of the stratigraphic and architectural contexts of Area A, B and D as well as the study of the pottery from the contexts so far investigated and the survey in Area C in the western sector of the site.
