Quantifying whether different demographic models produce incongruent results on population dynamics of two long-term studied rodent species

1. Population density (ind/ha) of long-term (>15 years) series of CMR populations, using distinct demographic models designed for both open and closed populations, were analysed for two sympatric species of rodents (Myodes glareolus and Apodemus flavicollis) from a mountain area in central Italy, in order to test the relative performance of various employed demographic models. In particular, the hypothesis that enumeration models systematically underestimate the population size of a given population was tested.

Counts of unique females with cubs in the Apennine brown bear population, 2006–2014

Brown bears in the Apennines, central Italy, survive in a precarious conservation status but the reproductive performance of the population has never been formally assessed. Each year, from 2006-2014, we conducted surveys of females with cubs (FWC) to estimate the minimum number of female bears that reproduced and annual productivity in this bear population. We discriminated unique family groups based on simultaneity of sightings, presence of individually recognizable bears, and ad hoc distance-based rules developed using GPS relocations from 11 adult female bears in our study population.

Urban morphology and design. Joint research perspectives and methodological comparison: Italy, Spain

Investigating the introduction of Italian culture into Late Qing China through some foreign travel diaries (1867-1897): What culture? About what Italy? By what China?

This paper aims to provide an overview of the information on Italian culture available in diaries written from 1867 to 1897 by the official delegates of the Qing government.

Macromammal and bird assemblages across the late Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in Italy. An extended zooarchaeological review

Evidence of human activities during the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition is well represented from rock-shelters, caves and open-air sites across Italy. Over the past decade, both the revision of taphonomic processes affecting archaeological faunal assemblages and new zooarchaeological studies have allowed archaeologists to better understand subsistence strategies and cultural behaviors attributed to groups of Neandertal and modern humans living in the region. This work presents the preliminary results of a 5-years research programme (ERC n.

A small intruder. A Medieval marble winged lion from Ravello

An image of a 12th century marble winged lion was provocatively included among the slides accompanying a lecture by the author at a recent conference at the American Academy in Rome to illustrate Umberto Scerrato’s work on Islamic archaeology and art history in Italy. The lion, in fact, was never published by Scerrato, but it and a winged bull, both once featuring as ornaments on the “Moresque Fountain” in Ravello (originally from a medieval building most likely from Ravello itself), are the subject of this brief article. They are of undeniable Islamic taste.

Exploring the function of Neolithic underground ovens through an integrate methodology

This contribution shows the first results of an experimental reconstruction of the Portonovo's underground ovens in order to explore their function. A comparison between the data collected on site and in laboratory confirm the hypothesis of a multipurpose use of the ovens and puts in evidence the problem of bias between the temperatures measured during the firing experiment and the temperatures estimated after XRPD analysis.

Mobile elites at Frattesina. Flows of people in a Late Bronze Age "port of trade" in northern Italy

Following a mid twelfth-century BC demographic crisis, Frattesina, in northern Italy, arose as a prominent hub linking continental Europe and the Mediterranean, as evidenced by the remarkable variety of exotic materials and commodities discovered at the site. Debate persists, however, about the extent to which migrants influenced the foundation and devel- opment of Frattesina. The authors present the results of strontium isotope analyses, which suggest significant migration to the site, par- ticularly of elites, mostly from within a 50km radius.
