Laser microsurgery versus radiotherapy versus open partial laryngectomy for T2 laryngeal carcinoma: a systematic review of oncological outcomes

The aim of the current systematic review is to update the pooled survival outcome of patients with T2 glottic carcinoma treated with either laser surgery (CO2 transoral laser microsurgery [CO2 TOLMS]), radiotherapy (RT), or open partial laryngectomy (OPL).

Does the diameter of the stapes prosthesis really matter? A prospective clinical study

Objectives/Hypothesis: To evaluate the influence of the diameter of stapes prosthesis on functional outcomes in stapes surgery. Study Design: Prospective cohort study. Methods: Fifty consecutive small fenestra stapedotomies performed using a 0.4-mm-diameter prosthesis were compared with 50 consecutive small fenestra stapedotomies carried out using a 0.6-mm-diameter piston. Audiological assessment following the recommendations of the Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium was performed 1 month after surgery. Postoperative complications between the two groups were noted.

Intensity and phase retrieval of IR laser pulse by THz-based measurement and THz waveform modulation

THz radiation is of great interest for a variety of applications. Simultaneously with the demonstration of high-intensity THz sources the idea to use this radiation for particle acceleration started to be investigated. THz accelerating gradients up to GV/m have been demonstrated in laboratory. THz radiation can be generated through the optical rectification process induced in non-linear crystals by a pump laser.

Optically functionalized biomorphism of bean seeds

Cannellini-Lingot beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) have been analyzed as optical collectors for ultra-weak photon emission (UPE) during the very early germination process. The optical path of the internally-generated light was investigated using a custom ray-tracing numerical code. Specific light maps reveal an optical focus in correspondence with the plumula and radical tip regions of the embryo. Endoscopic photon counting of the emission confirmed the numerical prediction.

Safety evaluation of fractional CO2 laser treatment in post-menopausal women with vaginal atrophy: a prospective observational study

Objectives: To evaluate the safety of and patient satisfaction with fractional CO2 laser for the treatment of vulvo-vaginal atrophy (VVA) in postmenopausal patients. Study design: Patients affected by VVA were considered for the study. All women were treated using a Lumenis AcuPulse DUO (Lumenis, Yokneam, Israel) in fractionated mode with a 28 mm probe, FemTouch™. Pain during different steps of the procedure (introduction, rotation and extraction of probe and laser impulse transmission) was evaluated on a 7-point Likert scale.

Safety and Feasibility of Outpatient Surgery in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Purpose: Most of endourological procedures along the urinary tract have been widely practiced as outpatient operations, including surgery for BPH. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess safety and feasibility of outpatient surgery for patients suffering from symptomatic BPH candidate for endoscopic disobstruction.

Plasmon controlled shaping of metal nanoparticle aggregates by femtosecond laser-induced melting

In this work, we show how to control the morphology of femtosecond laser melted gold nanosphere aggregates. A careful choice of both laser fluence and wavelength makes it possible to selectively excite different aggregate substructures to produce larger spherical nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanoprisms or necklace-like 1D nanostructures in which the nanoparticles are interlinked by bridges.

Laser beam self-focusing in optical fiber controlled through FBG integration

Optical fibers are elements that are mainly used
as a means to transmit light. In this paper, a fiber optic
constituted by a core, a cladding and a Bragg grating in the core
center has been studied. A laser beam with a Gaussian shape is
let to propagate through the core of the fiber with an intensitydependent
refractive index. In the center of the fiber, the
refractive index will reach the highest value, focusing the beam.
This property of the Gaussian beam to a specific intensity
