Comparative indoor pollution from Glo, Iqos, and Juul, using traditional combustion cigarettes as benchmark. Evidence from the randomized sur-vapes air trial

Modified risk products (MRP) such as electronic vaping cigarettes (EVC) and heat-not-burn cigarettes (HNBC) are appealing alternatives to combustion cigarettes. Limited between-and within-device comparative data are available on MRP. We aimed at comparing indoor particulate matter (PM) emissions measured in a randomized trial enforcing standardized smoking sessions, testing different devices and flavors of MRP, using traditional combustion cigarettes (TCC) as benchmark.

Impact of environmental pollution and weather changes on the incidence of ST-elevation myocardial infarction

Background: Environmental pollution and weather changes unfavorably impact on cardiovascular disease. However, limited research has focused on ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the most severe yet distinctive form of acute coronary syndrome. Methods and results: We appraised the impact of environmental and weather changes on the incidence of STEMI, analysing the bivariate and multivariable association between several environmental and atmospheric parameters and the daily incidence of STEMI in two large Italian urban areas.

Iron release in aqueous environment by fresh volcanic ash from Mount Etna (Italy) and Popocatépetl (Mexico) volcanoes

In this study, we performed leaching experiments for timescales of hours-to-months in deionized water on fresh volcanic ash from Mt. Etna (Italy) and Popocatépetl (Mexico) volcanos to monitor Fe release as a function of ash mineral chemistry and size, with the aim of clarifying Fe release mechanisms and eventually evaluating the impact of volcanic ash on marine and lacustrine environments. To define sample mineralogy and Fe speciation, inclusive characterization was obtained by means of XRF, SEM, XRPD, EELS and Mössbauer spectroscopies.

SARS-CoV-2 spread in northern Italy. what about the pollution role

The recent epidemic of the new SARS-CoV-2 in the northern regions of Italy is putting the organization of the Italian health system under serious attack. The current emergency requires all possible efforts to stem the spread of the virus. In this context, it is clear that we have the urgent need to rely upon etiopathogenetic data, in order to do all possible efforts to block the epidemic. However, observing the trend of the infections in China and the geographic areas of the main outbreaks, it could be hypothesized that air pollution plays a role.

Cluster analysis of microclimate data to optimize the number of sensors for the assessment of indoor environment within museums

For the first time, the cluster analysis (k-means) has been applied on long time series of temperature and relative humidity measurements to identify the thermo-hygrometric features in a museum. Based on ASHRAE (2011) classification, 84% of time all rooms in the Napoleonic Museum in Rome (case study) were found in the class of control B. This result was obtained by analyzing all recorded data in 10 rooms of the museum as well as using the cluster aggregation.

An identification and a prioritisation of geographic and temporal data gaps of Mediterranean marine databases

Getting an overall view of primary data available from existing Earth Observation Systems and networks databases for the Mediterranean Sea, the main objective of this paper is to identify temporal and geographic data gaps and to elaborate a new method for providing a prioritisation of missing data useful for end-users that have to pinpoint strategies and models to fill these gaps. Existing data sources have been identified from the analysis of the main projects and information systems available.

Correlations of PM10 concentrations in urban areas with vehicle fleet development, rain precipitation and diesel fuel sales

Although in many developed countries the green transition towards sustainable mobility is going faster and faster towards low or zero emission vehicles, road traffic is so far one of the key PM10 pollution source in urban areas. This research compares and analyses correlations between PM10 pollution trends in urban areas and the following parameters: vehicles fleet, rain precipitations and diesel fuel sales. The city of Rome has been selected as pilot area, analysing data gathered by its PM10 monitoring network between 2006 and 2017.

Mapping sea water surface in Persian Gulf, oil spill detection using Sentinal-1 images

The present study investigates an oil spill event in the Al Khafji region using Sentinel 1 SAR images. Al Khafji is on the border between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in the Persian Gulf and it is considered a neutral zone. Al Khafji region has the potential to produce more than 470,000 barrels of oil per day (Mbbl/d). Methods based on multi sensor satellite images (Sentinel-2, Landsat 8, Terra, Cosmo_SkyMed, RADARSAT, etc.) analysis have been developed for detecting oil slicks from known natural seeps as well as oil spill events.

Nearshore wave energy assessment of Iranian coastlines

In this study, the measured wave data for year 2010 at 3 hour time step for six sites in the Caspian sea, Persian Gulf and Oman Sea of Iran have been statistically analysed to determine the wave power potential of Iranian coastlines. The statistical attitudes allows to estimate the significant weight height (Hs), peak wave energy period (Tp), and the wave energy flux for unit of crest length.

Use of gold nanoparticles as substrate for diffusive monitoring of gaseous mercury

In the present work, the study and the performances of an adsorbent material for gaseous mercury employed in different diffusive bodies geometries is presented. The material is based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) deposited on quartz fibres filters, suitable for bonding the gaseous mercury through an amalgamation process. Following thermal desorption and analysis, the behavior of different diffusive samplers prototypes was compared. Both indoor and outdoor exposures were carried out in order to evaluate the advantages and shortcomings of the geometries in study at different sites.
