The text investigates the figure of Pouillon as a discussed, adventurous and contradictory character, a true master in habitat design in the late twentieth century, during which time he had a modest critical fortune, and not only in Italy. If one were to draw up the ranking of the major architects of the twentieth century, Pouillon certainly deserves a top position. Although Pouillon will build large, unconventional housing settlements in France, Algeria and Marseille, he will always remain outside the history of official architecture.

Queste brevi note costituiscono solo un accenno alle questioni che l’architettura di Fernand Pouillon continua a sollecitare. È innegabile infatti la preminenza della tematica complessa del costruire che porta con sé relazioni serrate tra costruzione e materia, tra costruzione e tettonica, ma anche tra il costruire e il significato dell’architettura nel suo compiersi. Quest’ultima relazione riguarda i rapporti con la cultura e dunque con la tradizione, o le tradizioni.
