Quantile contours and allometric modelling for risk classification of abnormal ratios with an application to asymmetric growth-restriction in preterm infants

We develop an approach to risk classification based on quantile contours and allometric modelling of multivariate anthropometric measurements. We propose the definition of allometric direction tangent to the directional quantile envelope, which divides ratios of measurements into half-spaces. This in turn provides an operational definition of directional quantile that can be used as cutoff for risk assessment.

Chemometric Approach to a Rapid Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Analysis of Complex Heroin-Based Mixtures

Heroin is one of the most frequently seized drugs in Southeastern Europe. Due to the position in the Balkan route, the Republic of Serbia keeps important role in suppression of the trafficking of heroin for domestic and foreign illegal market. This research is aimed to provide a good scientific approach in the field of seized heroin analysis. Two different forms of heroin are present in the illegal market, mostly in mixtures with typical "cutting" agents: caffeine, paracetamol, and sugars.

Extending substrate sensing capabilities of zinc tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine-based stereodynamic probe

Tripodal metal complexes have been widely used for catalysis and more recently also for molecular recognition applications. Their ability in recognition and signal amplification of chiral substrates is because of the setup of the ligand around the metal in a propeller shape. Within this subject, we have recently reported tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine- and triphenolamine-based complexes for the determination of the enantiomeric excess of various substrates.

Distinct modes of functional connectivity induced by movie-watching

A fundamental question in systems neuroscience is how endogenous neuronal activity self-organizes during particular brain states. Recent neuroimaging studies have demonstrated systematic relationships between resting-state and task-induced functional connectivity (FC). In particular, continuous task studies, such as movie watching, speak to alterations in coupling among cortical regions and enhanced fluctuations in FC compared to the resting-state.

The influence of pH on the scleroglucan and scleroglucan/borax systems

The effects that an increase of environmental pH has on the triple helix of scleroglucan (Sclg)
and on the Sclg/borax hydrogel are reported. Rheological experiments show that the hydrogel is less
sensitive to pH increase than Sclg alone, while at pH = 14 a dramatic viscosity decrease takes place for
both systems. This effect is evidenced also by the reduced water uptake and anisotropic elongation
detected, at pH = 14, by the swelling behaviour of tablets prepared with the Sclg/borax system.

Chemometrics applied to plant spectral analysis

In this chapter, a survey of the chemometric (data analytical) methods most used for the characterization of plant varieties and cultivars based on spectroscopic measurements is presented. After an introductory section, illustrating the basics of data representation, the main tools for exploratory (descriptive) data analysis and predictive modeling are discussed. In particular, how to predict quantitative responses by multivariate calibration methods and how to assess qualitative attributes by means of classification techniques are addressed.

Correlation between chronological and physiological age of males from their multivariate urinary endogenous steroid profile and prostatic carcinoma-induced deviation

The biosynthesis of endogenous androgenic anabolic steroids (EAAS) in males varies with age. Knowledge of the general urinary EAAS profile's dependence from aging – not reported up to now – may represents a prerequisite for its exploitation in the screening and diagnostic support for several pathologies. Extended urinary EAAS profiles were obtained from healthy and pathological individuals, using a GC–MS method which was fully validated by a stepwise, analyst-independent scheme.
