Covid-19 and the role of smoking. The protocol of the multicentric prospective study COSMO-IT (COvid19 and SMOking in ITaly)
The emergency caused by Covid-19 pandemic raised interest in studying lifestyles and comorbidities as important determinants of poor Covid-19 prognosis. Data on tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity are still limited, while no data are available on the role of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTP). To clarify the role of tobacco smoking and other lifestyle habits on COVID-19 severity and progression, we designed a longitudinal observational study titled COvid19 and SMOking in ITaly (COSMO-IT).
Tobacco smoking and COVID-19 pandemic. Old and new issues. A summary of the evidence from the scientific literature
Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic burst onto the international scene as a new disease disproportionately affecting certain patient groups; hence it has risen many questions yet to be clarified. The aim of this study was to outline the main issues that led tobacco smoking being discussed as a potential risk factor associated with COVID-19. Methods: Articles from MEDLINE and pre-prints published from January to April 2020 were identified. Results: Data from China showed that men had more severe outcomes of COVID-19 than women.
Cardiometabolic multimorbidity is associated with a worse Covid-19 prognosis than individual cardiometabolic risk factors. A multicentre retrospective study (CoViDiab II)
Background: Cardiometabolic disorders may worsen Covid-19 outcomes. We investigated features and Covid-19 outcomes for patients with or without diabetes, and with or without cardiometabolic multimorbidity. Methods: We collected and compared data retrospectively from patients hospitalized for Covid-19 with and without diabetes, and with and without cardiometabolic multimorbidity (defined as ≥ two of three risk factors of diabetes, hypertension or dyslipidaemia).
Sequential dual-phase cone-beam CT is able to intra-procedurally predict the one-month treatment outcome of multi-focal HCC, in course of degradable starch microsphere TACE
Objective: To evaluate the prognostic value of sequential dual-phase CBCT (DP-CBCT) imaging performed during degradable starch microsphere TACE (DSM-TACE) session in predicting the HCC’s response to treatment, evaluate with modify response evaluation criteria in solid tumours (mRECIST) at 1-month multi-detector CT (MDCT) follow-up. Materials and methods: Between January and May 2018, 24 patients (68.5 ± 8.5 year [45–85]) with HCC lesions (n = 96 [average 4/patient]) were prospectively enrolled.
Transcriptional profiling of medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity (MBEN) reveals two clinically relevant tumor subsets with VSNL1 as potent prognostic marker
Medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity (MBEN) is one of the few central nervous system (CNS) tumor entities occurring in infants which is traditionally associated with good to excellent prognosis. Some MBEN, however, have been reported with an unfavorable clinical course. We performed an integrated DNA/RNA-based molecular analysis of a multi-institutional MBEN cohort (n = 41) to identify molecular events which might be responsible for variability in patients’ clinical outcomes.
The AIEOP 2nd series of children and adolescents intracranial ependymoma. An integrated molecular and clinical characterization with a long-term follow-up
BACKGROUND: A prospective 2002-2014 study stratified 160 patients by resection extent and histological grade, reporting results in 2016. We reanalyzed the series after a median 119 months, adding retrospectively patients’ molecular features.
METHODS: Follow-up of all patients was updated. DNA copy-number analysis and gene-fusion detection could be completed for 94/160 patients, methylation classification for 68.
Furcation involvement classification: a comprehensive review and a new system proposal
Various classification systems have been proposed to describe furcation lesions and Glickman's classification for many years seems to have been the most widely utilized in the sole clinical diagnosis with no reference to the prognostic value of the lesion itself.
Evaluation of clinicopathological and molecular parameters on disease recurrence of papillary thyroid cancer patient. A retrospective observational study
The American Joint Committee on Cancer has revised the Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM) staging system for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients. We examined the impact of this new classification (TNM-8) on patient stratification and estimated the prognostic value of clinicopathological features for the disease-free interval (DFI) in a cohort of 1148 PTC patients. Kaplan-Meier analyses showed that all clinicopathological parameters analyzed, except age and multifocality, were associated significantly with DFI.
Prognosis of elderly gastric cancer patients after surgery: a nomogram to predict survival
This study aimed to identify clinicopathological factors associated with the outcome of elderly patients with gastric cancer (GC), and to construct a nomogram for individual risk prediction. Tumor characteristics of 143 patients aged ≥ 80 years underwent surgery for GC were collected and analyzed by uni- and multivariate analyses. A prognostic nomogram was constructed using the factors which resulted to be significantly associated with overall survival. Discrimination of nomogram was tested by Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves and boxplots.
