A Stepwise Approach to Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses of Endovascular Interventions

The accrual of clinical studies poses important challenges to researchers and practitioners, especially in the field of endovascular therapy, where patient, lesion, technique, and device subtleties abound. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses may prove particularly fruitful in such settings by increasing statistical precision and bolstering external validity if the evidence base on a specific topic is consistent or by highlighting important discrepancies in the opposite scenario.

Exploring risk of falls and dynamic unbalance in cerebellar ataxia by inertial sensor assessment

Background. Patients suffering from cerebellar ataxia have extremely variable gait kinematic features. We investigated whether and how wearable inertial sensors can describe the gait kinematic features among ataxic patients. Methods. We enrolled 17 patients and 16 matched control subjects. We acquired data by means of an inertial sensor attached to an ergonomic belt around pelvis, which was connected to a portable computer via Bluetooth. Recordings of all the patients were obtained during overground walking.

High strain and low social support at work as risk factors for being the target of third-party workplace violence among healthcare sector workers

Introduction: Healthcare workers are particularly vulnerable to third-party workplace violence. The experience of work-related stress, by threatening the psychological balance of healthcare workers, making them less effective in man-aging the relationship with patients and their family members, may significantly contribute to third-party violence.

Vitamin K deficiency and covid-19

Summarizing, the results of this study suggest that vitamin K deficiency is frequently observed in COVID-19 patients and that the deficit is greater in males than in females. In addition, in male patients, vitamin K deficiency is associated with a greater IL-6 level in the general circulation. In conclusion, we propose that vitamin K deficiency could support both cytokine storm Th2 by increasing proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, which is involved in the building up of the inflammatory response recruiting both cellular and humoral components.

Another side of the association between body mass index (BMI) and clinical outcomes of cancer patients receiving programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1)/ Programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) checkpoint inhibitors: A multicentre analysis of immune-re

Background: Several studies have found an association between higher body mass index (BMI) and improved clinical outcomes in cancer patients receiving programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) checkpoint inhibitors. In a previous study, we found that overweight/obese patients were significantly more likely to experience any grade immune-related adverse events (irAEs) compared to non-overweight patients.

Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death: Focus on the Subcutaneous Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator

The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is the most effective therapy to prevent sudden cardiac death (SCD) in high-risk patients. To overcome infections and failure of transvenous leads, the most frightening complications of conventional ICDs, a completely subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) has been developed and is currently adopted in routine clinical practice.

Executive Summary of the 2018 Joint Consensus Document on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Italy

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death, disability and hospitalization in Italy. Primary prevention strategies are able to prevent clinically evident CVDs, mostly by early identifying asymptomatic, otherwise healthy individuals at risk of developing CVDs. A more modern approach recommended for effective CVD prevention is based on “4P”, that is: Predictive, Preventive, Personalized and Participative.

Clinical outcomes in adult athletes with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: A 7-year follow-up study

Objective Current guidelines recommend precautionary disqualification from competitive sports in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We assessed the incidence of cardiovascular events in a cohort of patients with HCM engaged in long-term exercise programmes and competitive sport. Methods We reviewed data on 88 consecutive athletes diagnosed with HCM, from 1997 to 2017; 92 male, 98 Caucasian, median age 31 (IQR: 19-44) years. All participated in regular exercise programmes and competitive sport at study entry. We performed follow-up evaluation after 7±5 (1-21) years.

Radio Base Stations and Electromagnetic Fields: GIS Applications and Models for Identifying Possible Risk Factors and Areas Exposed. Some Exemplifications in Rome

This paper—which is contextualized in the discussion on the methodological pluralism
and the main topics of medical geography, the complexity theory in geographies of health, the remaking of medical geography and ad hoc systems of data elaboration—focuses on radio base stations (RBSs) as sources of electromagnetic fields, to provide GIS applications and simplifying-prudential models that are able to identify areas that could potentially be exposed to hazard. After
highlighting some specific aspects regarding RBSs and their characteristics and summarizing the

FTO rs9939609 gene polymorphism and obesity. Lack of association in kidney transplantation

The fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene is one of the most important obesity susceptibility genes. Some FTO gene polymorphisms have been associated with obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, all conditions for which, after transplant, there is increased susceptibility, due to effects of immunosuppressive regimens.
