Respiratory diseases represent a major healthcare burden worldwide. Lung transplantation (LTx) is the gold-standard for end-stage patients, strongly limited by shortage of available/suitable donor lungs. Normothermic ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) has significantly increased the number of lungs suitable for transplantation. Steen solution is used for EVLP, but the mechanisms involved in its beneficial properties remain to be clarified.

Science and democracy are founded on the same values. In contemporary society, this common genesis relates with social organization founded on universal suffrage. One of the challenges of the modern knowledge society is the development of more appropriate forms of democratic participation to incorporate scientific innovation and technology through an expansion of citizenship rights.

The paper provides an interpretation of Aristotle’s view on scientific inquiry as problem solving. It tackles passages where
Aristotle emphasises the role that the problem-solving activity has in science, and where he describes the history of humans’
problem-solving activity and the historical development of natural science as a problem-solving activity. Further, the paper
examines Aristotle’s practice of raising, assessing and solving problems as well as the heuristic procedures he employs to

Eugenio Lecaldano’s book Sul senso della vita places the discussion about the meaning of life in a naturalized and evolutionary framework. Following his suggestion about the relevance of Darwinism for the enquiry about the meaning of life the topic of the relation between such enquiry and science is put under focus.
