An Italian dramatist and poet, whose verse translation of Aristophanes’ Frogs (only the third known Italian translation of Aristophanes) was published posthumously in 1804; some of his own comedies are Aristophanic in spirit if not in style.

Italo Calvino is reputed to be the most read Italian writer in the world. After the posthumous publication of his Six Memos for the Next Millennium, his works – translated in innumerable languages – have met with sustained success and made him a reference point among intellectuals in the fields of literature and culture in numerous countries.

The role played by Italian literature in the renewal of the Chinese literary canon was certainly limited, compared to that played by other Western literatures. However Italian authors and their works were not completely absent in the cultural Chinese arena at the beginning of the 20th century.
