Fair and sustainable well-being indicators for European countries: Comparing different synthesizing approaches

The aim of this paper is to define a system to measure well-being in the European countries by using synthetic indicators. In this perspective, we adopted the framework and the methodology of the Italian project BES (Sustainable and Equitable Well-being for Italy). The project, established by the Italian Institute of Statistics and the Council of Economics and Labour, is widely considered one of the most advanced among the several projects aimed at providing the countries with measures able to support policy decision in the beyond GDP perspective.

Modeling “Equitable and Sustainable Well-being” (BES) Using Bayesian Networks: A Case Study of the Italian Regions

Measurement of well-being has been a highly debated topic since the end of the last century. While some specific aspects are still open issues, a multidimensional approach as well as the construction of shared and well-rooted systems of indicators are now accepted as the main route to measure this complex phenomenon. A meaningful effort, in this direction, is that of the Italian “Equitable and Sustainable Well-being” (BES) system of indicators, developed by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) and the National Council for Economics and Labour (CNEL).

Exploring the relationship between fertility and well-being: What is smart?

We analyse the association between fertility rates and well-being in the Italian regions in the period 2012-2017. Well-being is measured by means of the indicators of Equitable and Sustainable Well-being (BES), collected by ISTAT since 2013. We expect that the regions performing better in terms of well-being conditions are also those with the highest level of fertility. We use graphical and statistical methods in order to compare the rankings of Italian regions according to different BES domains with that according to TFR.

Fertility and well-being in the italian regions

We analyse the association between fertility rates and well-being in the Italian regions in the period 2012-2017. Well-being is measured by the indicators of Equitable and Sustainable Well-being (BES), collected by ISTAT since 2013 with the aim of evaluating the economic, social and environmental development of the society through measurement of citizens’ life quality. We expect that the regions performing better in terms of well-being conditions are also those with the highest levels of fertility.

I embrace my LGB identity. Self-reassurance, social safeness, and the distinctive relevance of authenticity to well-being in italian lesbians, gay men, and bisexual people

We explored the differences among 327 lesbian, gay, and/or bisexual (LGB) individuals on the dimensions of the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Positive Identity Measure (LGB-PIM), a recently developed instrument to assess positive facets of LGB identity. We evaluated the relationship between the dimensions of LGB-PIM and self-relating processes (self-criticism, self-hate, and self-reassurance), internalized sexual stigma (ISS), social safeness and well-being, and the distinctive impact of the LGB-PIM dimensions on well-being.

The role of nature and environment in behavioural medicine

The Society of Behavioural Medicine (www.sbm.org) defines behavioural medicine as an “interdisciplinary field concerned with the development and integration of behavioural, psychosocial, and biomedical science knowledge and techniques relevant to the understanding of health and illness, and the application of this knowledge and these techniques to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation”.

Psychotherapy and Art Therapy: A pilot study of group treatment for patients with traumatic brain injury

Here we investigated the efficacy of group Psychotherapy and Art Therapy in rebuilding self-identity after traumatic brain injury (TBI), assessing their effects on psychological aspects in twelve patients with severe TBI. Overall, the results show an increased ability to adapt to the experiences of life as well as a higher level of awareness, social functioning and emotional autoregulation. Furthermore, patients exhibited a reduction in depressive symptoms and in the perception of physical problems.

Measuring Equitable and Sustainable Well-Being in Italian Regions: The Non-aggregative Approach

The official Italian well-being measuring system (“Equitable and Sustainable Well-being— BES”) is probably the worldwide most advanced attempt to pursue the beyond GDP perspective effectively. In it, well-being is described in terms of 12 domains and a complex multi-indicator system of around 130 indicators, drawn mainly from Istat (official Italian statistical bureau) surveys and administrative archives. In order to get a more synthetic view of well-being, in the last four BES reports Istat employed aggregative procedures providing composite indicators for each well-being domain.
