HARMONICA

The HARMONICA project aims to develop a comprehensive framework for modeling and lifecycle assessment of built
heritage by integrating Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies. The
primary objectives are to establish a structured representation of heritage information for robust LCA analysis and to create a
streamlined LCA workflow tailored to heritage assets. By addressing gaps in existing literature and practice concerning LCA in
built heritage, HARMONICA seeks to enhance the sustainability of cultural heritage through effective environmental
assessments.
The project will standardize heritage data for compatibility across various platforms, merging traditional documentation with
modern digital representations. It will also develop specific tools for LCA that address the unique challenges of heritage
conservation and restoration.
The methodology includes a state-of-the-art review, selection and definition of specific LCA parameters for HBIM applications
with data standardization, developing a tailored LCA workflow, and testing it through modern built heritage case studies. The
project will leverage ontologies to achieve semantic enrichment and data interoperability, enhancing the integration of HBIM
and LCA. The project will engage stakeholders through workshops, ensuring the transfer of knowledge and fostering
collaboration among stakeholders, thereby supporting the longevity and resilience of our shared cultural heritage.
HARMONICA's results aim to provide innovative solutions for today's heritage management challenges and to contribute to
the knowledge of sustainable practices, promoting broader acceptance and application of LCA in heritage conservation. By
engaging stakeholders through workshops and knowledge dissemination activities, the project aspires to encourage
collaboration within academic and professional communities, ensuring the preservation and resilience of our shared cultural
heritage.
