The introductory section of this essay offers an assessment of the conferences and seminars held for First World War centenary in China, stressing the nationalistic elements of these celebrations. Then, the investigation focuses on the innovative contributions provided by the studies of the well-known scholar from Hong Kong University, Xu Guoqi. His analysis had great influence on the works of other historians from the People’s Republic, giving rise to new historiographical perspectives, which bear interesting political implications for related researches on Chinese history of the Twenties.
