Abstract · The Articles for the « New York Daily Tribune » by Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso, Exile in Turkey · Between 1850 and 1853, Cristina di Belgiojoso, exiled to Turkey after the end of the 1849 Roman Republic, sends articles to the « New York Daily Tribune » where she takes stock of the defeat of the European revolutionary movements and describes the country where she lives, with particular attention to women’s life. Far from any fascination with the exotic, Cristina observes the Eastern society with a critical spirit, overturning the judgment on harems as places of pleasure spread by so many Western narratives and giving the American readership a disenchanted image of contemporary Turkey. In her articles, Turkey becomes an observatory from which she can rethink her contemporary world, the relationships between men and women, education, progress, social and economic dynamics, and political evolution. Letters of an Exile is one of the most significant female testimonies of the exile during the Risorgimento and an example of modern journalism, adapted to the American readership.
