De historie van mejuffrouw Sara Burgerhart (1782) enjoyed an early editorial fortune in Europe in its times. The circulation of Wolff and Deken’s masterpiece is tightly connected to its educational aim. The first part of the article outlines the dissemination of this and some other Dutch novels in the context of the general circulation of ideas and works dealing with the education, especially of women and children. The mediators (translator and printers) are mentioned as well. Further considerations are connected to textual hints testifying the presence in Wolff and Deken’s novel of an underlying educational discourse focusing on women, reaching much further than the conventional seduction (or ‘tested woman’) plot.
