Il progetto Acheloo. Tecnologie per l'archeologia nel territorio di Civitavecchia
The Acheloo project, which started in 2016, aims at investigating the area located to the North of the city of Civitavecchia (Rome), where the settlement of Acquae Tauri – predating the foundation of the harbor city of Centumcellae – is supposed to be buried, and where a pool dating from the Roman period was found. The archaeological research, conducted by the University of Bologna and funded by the Municipality of Civitavecchia, aims at analyzing the archaeological potential and at providing an integrated reconstruction of the territory located between the Mignone and Marangone rivers. The survey campaign conducted in 2017 in the Ficoncella area revealed the presence of a large rectangular structure, subsequently confirmed by an archaeological exploration. The present article offers an archaeological contextualization of the study area from the Late Antiquity to the Early Medieval period, combining data from local historiography with the preliminary results from the archaeological explorations.
