The article examines differences between the concept of territory in Eastern and Western Europe and focuses on the totalitarian regimes of Eastern Europe in the second part of the Twentieth
century. Through both a historical and political review of this juridical category – from Middle Age to modern times, from public to private space, from original incongruity to substantial homogeneity in the case of totalitarianisms – the article discusses the changes in perspective and overturnings of its meaning in totalitarian regimes, up to nowadays depersonalisation of the “non-places".
