The Carbognano hoard (VT). New reflections on the dating and function of the sub-libral aes grave
This paper aims at reconsidering dating and function of the Aes Grave, in particular the sub-libral series, in some areas of southern and central Italy, against the background of archaeological, historical and topographic evidence. Previous studies and literary sources on the matter are examined, as attention is focused mainly of the finds of some relevant hoards such found in sanctuaries and in votive contexts as Torvaianica, La Bruna, Pozzaglio, Rome’s Monte Mario and others. Function and chronology of the sub-libral Aes Grave are extensively discussed in connection with the historical events that took place in the areas involved, with special attention to the Romanization process. Updated bibliographic references on the topic are of course also provided.
