This article aims at highlighting the importance of clear legal writing in the context of the European Union. Firstly, it will point out the democratic role played by translation at the European Union, a supranational institution founded on the principle of multilingualism and multiculturalism. Secondly, by means of concrete examples, it will show how clear legal writing and translation need to be conceived as two interconnected processes, having a direct impact on translation quality. Finally, our analysis will integrate by the comparison between the two Italian versions of the European Commission’s guide Scrivere chiaro (2010, 2013).
