Giulio Maresca is Associate Professor of Archaeology (“ASIA-01/A”) at Sapienza University of Rome. His research mainly focuses on: evolution of settlement patterns and material culture in Iran from the Iron Age to the Sasanian period; cultural interactions between south-eastern Iran and neighbouring areas in the light of archaeological evidence; Sasanian cultural landscapes in the Zagros area; maritime connectivity in the Sasanian empire. He has participated in numerous international archaeological projects in Iran, Uzbekistan, Iraq (Kurdistan Region), and Kuwait: at Isfahan (2002–2009), Bishapur (2012–2013), Samarkand (2016), Firuzabad (2018), Tepe Dasht (2018), Qal’a-ye Sam (2018), Kangavar (2019), Paikuli (2022–2023), Yasin Tepe (2022–2025) and Kadhma (2024). Currently, he serves as Director of SAMIra (Sapienza Archaeological Mission in Iran), Deputy Director of SAMKuw (Sapienza Archaeological Mission in Kuwait), and Field Director of MAIKI (Sapienza Archaeological Mission in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq).
