Thesis Title: "HSV-1 INDUCES COMPLEMENT ACTIVATION IN BRAIN CELLS: POSSIBLE TRIGGER OF SYNAPTIC DEFICITS"
Grade: Excellent with Honors
Supervisor: Prof. Anna Teresa Palamara
My PhD research showed evidence of a novel mechanism that may underlie synaptic damage induced by herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) in primary murine neuronal cells. My studies demonstrated how HSV-1 infection in primary neurons triggers the classical complement cascade, which cooperates with microglia to phagocytose virus-damaged synapses.
