Travelogues in intercultural exchanges: the representation of Italy in Oumei manyou riji

Travelogues in intercultural exchanges: the representation of Italy in Oumei manyou riji

The intercultural exchanges between Europe and Asia have a long and rich history; travelogues and diaries played an especially significant role in the process, at a later phase, for a variety of reasons. The focus of this research is a recognition of these representations in texts composed during Republican China (1912-1949), focusing in particular on Oumei manyou riji [Diary of a journey in Europe and the United States], composed by Chen Yifu (1869-1948) and his son Chen Dayou (dates unknown), a text that was never studied before.

Insects, Arachnids, and Other Arthropods in Mesopotamian Cuneiform Sources and Archaeological Contexts: An Interdisciplinary Study

The research project investigates the role and perception of insects, arachnids, and other arthropods in ancient Mesopotamia through a detailed analysis of cuneiform texts and archaeological evidence. It examines a wide range of sources, including administrative records, letters, literary compositions, divinatory and medical texts, proverbs, and popular sayings, in conjunction with data from the excavation of Abu Tbeirah, a third-millennium BCE site near Nasiriyah, southern Iraq.

CHIN-DICTIONARY - Brollo's Dictionarium sinico-latinum: linguistic innovations, textual connections, and trans-cultural translation

The focus of the project CHIN-DICTIONARY is the Dictionarium sinico-latinum (Chinese-Latin dictionary) by the Franciscan missionary Basilio Brollo (1648–1704); for a long time, only manuscript copies circulated, which were highly praised as an essential instrument for the study of Chinese. The role of the dictionary was deemed so important that projects to publish it were conceived but, after these plans failed, it was plagiarised in a revised form.
