GIS

A geographical and crosscutting look at the COVID-19 pandemic in an international framework. Introduction

In many research and educational contexts, the geographical approach, supported by GIS applications and Earth observation, can closely collaborate with other scientific and disciplinary sectors in terms of concrete proposals and detailed analysis aimed at tackling this and future health emergencies.
And it can i.e. happen:
- providing theoretical and methodological
contributions founded on solid contents and
thoughtful critical thinking; stimulating renewed didactics and third mission, also taking advantage of the possibilities

Un modello di pianificazione energetica territoriale per le aree urbane. Energy planning model for urban areas

The contribution describes a model of territorial energy planning to assess the consumption of thermal and electrical energy and the potential of solar energy that can be used by residential buildings, in order to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, in line with the Europe 2020 objectives.
A method for estimating the thermal energy needs is described, both for heating, and for electricity comparing it with the assessment of potential photovoltaic and solar thermal productivity.

Development of a new GIS-based method to detect high natural value farmlands. A case study in central Italy

An original method for the identification of High Natural Value farmlands is presented. Gathering information about land use (CORINE Land Cover), geomorphology (elevation and Terrain Ruggedness Index) and remote sensing data in a GIS environment we were able to develop a new detection process; its application to a wide sector of central Italy, in areas characterized by high biodiversity and relevant agronomic and cultural value, is presented. Thus, a new tool for diminishing sampling efforts and economic and time wastes in territorial studies is provided.

Landscape archaeology and ancient establishments strategy. Spatial analysisfor the investigation of Roman colonial territories in Wadi Abiod, Aures, Eastern Algeria

The present article exposes the potential of a geo-archaeological approach in revealing the diversity of settlement strategies within the colonized areas according to an intramountainous landscape conditions. It attempts to understand the Roman expansion in the valley of Wadi Abiod, an important fluvial artery in the eastern Atlas based onthe reconstruction and analysis of ancient roads systems.

The re-elaboration of John Snow’s map in a GIS environment. Input for transferring methodological and applied skills being inspired by a virtuous practical example of social utility

John Snow’s map made it possible to save many human lives by interrupting the spread of cholera, in an area of London in 1854 after the study of a relevant number of cases which allowed him to put his assumptions and research into practice. His work had a crucial role for future developments of epidemiology and provided the basis for (geo)spatial discussions and density studies in relation to risk factors and his insights enabled cartographic and successively GIS approaches, as support to medical studies, to have remarkable advances.

Momenti di formazione applicativa e d’indirizzo professionale. “The Science of Where: Paradigma dell’Italia 5.0” (Roma, 16-17 maggio 2018)

The power of GIS language

I have been working now for 50 years – since
the foundation of Environmental Systems
Research Institute (Esri), in 1969 – on building
software tools that help different kinds of users
do their work better.
Some of this is daily management, some of it
is work flows but the power of GIS is the central
power, the heart of GIS is really remarkable. It’s
almost magical to me. So, I’m sort of
rediscovering myself and emphasising to all of
GIS users all over the world to make better
