FILdiFERRO. The reactivation of Historical Frames in multi-scalar urban planning. The railway as active heritage in integrated regeneration processes

FILdiFERRO focuses on the reactivation of the “Historical Frame” (Telaio Storico) in multi-scalar urban planning. It involves railways as an active heritage in the processes of Integrated Urban Regeneration. Similarly, ecological-environmental and infrastructural frameworks, HF requires integrated strategies, appropriate procedures, regulatory devices, and multi-actor processes, to protect and adapt the heritage.

The aim is to apply the HF concept to the Civitavecchia-Capranica-Orte (C-C-O) railway, out of use and considered as heritage to be recontextualized: restoring the quality of the marginal areas and revitalise the communities along the railway. FILdiFERRO collects the theoretical outcomes of TE.ST research (2022). It defined “Historical Frame” by using case studies and critical-interpretative analysis of the Cultural Heritage (CH). Now, the concept must find empirical application in a territory characterized by historical stratifications and fragilities.

The C-C-O railway runs through southern Tuscia, currently suffering depopulation. The line was built to connect the ports of Civitavecchia and Ancona with productive, agricultural and industrial areas. The planned reactivation of the railway aims to enhance accessibility and sustainable mobility to achieve the ecological transition. This would enable the revival of local economies, reinterpreting the geo-morpho-typological features and their tangible and intangible heritage.
