CO2 inflow and elements desorption prior to a seismic sequence, Amatrice-Norcia 2016, Italy

The 2016 Mw ≥ 6.0 Amatrice-Norcia earthquakes (central Apennines, Italy) and the related seismic sequence were associated with increases in arsenic and vanadium concentrations recorded in groundwater springs a few months before the earthquakes occurred. To evaluate these signals as reliable seismic precursors and effective predictive tools, we studied the geochemical processes that caused these anomalies.

Tracing deep fluid source contribution to groundwater in an active seismic area (central Italy). A combined geothermometric and isotopic (δ13C) perspective

An understanding of the origin and migration pathways of geofluids in an active seismic area is of paramount importance in terms of societal challenges such as mitigation of seismic hazards. This study investigates the relationship between the stable isotope ratio 13C/12C of deep CO2 and geothermometry in selected groundwater samples located close to extensional faults in central Italy. The temperature range is inferred from an equation based on the Na/Li ratio and chemical geothermal modelling: 113–130 °C.

Thiotaurine:from chemical and biological properties to role in H2S signaling

In the last decade thiotaurine, 2-aminoethane thiosulfonate, has been investigated as an inflammatory modulating agent as a result of its ability to release hydrogen sulfide (H2S) known to play regulatory roles in inflammation. Thiotaurine can be included in the "taurine family" due to structural similarity to taurine and hypotaurine, and is characterized by the presence of a sulfane sulfur moiety.

2,4,6-Trihydroxyphenanthrene, a trans-resveratrol photoreaction byproduct: first evidences of genotoxic risk

Resveratrol, a natural product with well-known multiple beneficial effects, has been widely used as a bioactive principle for the development of anti-aging topical phytoproducts. These products are usually applied to skin that is often exposed to solar light for a long time, leading to potentially harmful resveratrol derivatives. In this study we investigated the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of 2,4,6-trihydroxyphenanthrene (THP), derived from trans-resveratrol photochemical isomerization and electrocyclization.

A gas chromatographic–mass spectrometric method for the simultaneous determination of resveratrol isomers and 2,4,6-trihydroxyphenanthrene in red wines exposed to UV-light

Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) is one of the most abundant polyphenols in red grapes, and red wine represents one of the most important dietary source of this compound. Although its beneficial properties on human health have been widely investigated over the last 30 years, very little is known about its derivatives. Resveratrol can indeed undergo glycosylation, oligomerization and, upon UV-light exposure, it can isomerize from the trans- to the cis-isomer, which can further cyclize to 2,4,6-trihydroxyphenanthrene (THP).

Heart failure prognosis over time. how the prognostic role of oxygen consumption and ventilatory efficiency during exercise has changed in the last 20 years

Aims: Exercise-derived parameters, specifically peak exercise oxygen uptake (peak VO 2 ) and minute ventilation/carbon dioxide relationship slope (VE/VCO 2 slope), have a pivotal prognostic value in heart failure (HF). It is unknown how the prognostic threshold of peak VO 2 and VE/VCO 2 slope has changed over the last 20 years in parallel with HF prognosis improvement. Methods and results: Data from 6083 HF patients (81% male, age 61 ± 13 years), enrolled in the MECKI score database between 1993 and 2015, were retrospectively analysed.

Von Neumann dimension, Hodge index theorem and geometric applications

A reformulation of the Hodge index theorem within the framework of Atiyah’s L2-index theory is provided. More precisely, given a compact Kähler manifold (M, h) of even complex dimension 2m, we prove that σ(M)=∑p,q=02m(-1)ph(2),Γp,q(M)where σ(M) is the signature of M and h(2),Γp,q(M) are the L2-Hodge numbers of M with respect to a Galois covering having Γ as group of deck transformations. Likewise we also prove an L2-version of the Frölicher index theorem, see (3).

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of a third polymorph of 2,6-dimethoxybenzoic acid

A third crystalline form of the title compound, C9H10O4, crystallizing in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P21/c, has been identified during screening for co-crystals. The asymmetric unit comprises a non-planar independent molecule with a synplanar conformation of the OH group. The sterically bulky o-methoxy substituents force the carboxy group to be twisted away from the plane of the benzene ring by 74.10 (6)°. The carboxy group exhibits the acidic H atom disordered over two sites between two O atoms.
